Lyrians, pronounced Lee-ree-ans, Lyrians are a species of mammal which belongs to the feline ancestry, with primitive lions as their distant relatives. Despite adapting to become bipedal and more humanoid, Lyrians still retain large, thick manes which replace any need of the typical feline tail. The mane serves as an extra layer for protection for the Lyrian's neck and back, and it serves as a status symbol amongst the community.
Lyrians have a “gem” or “stone” fixed in their foreheads, the purpose of this gem is quite simple, for it is directly connected to the body, and in turn the brain, of the creature which allows the synaptic registration of “emotion” to be transmitted and expressed through various colours. The “gem” allows Lyrians to use a sequence of lights and colours to communicate silently between themselves in a language which, to this day, has not been deciphered by outsiders. The most a non-Lyrian can hope to discern by the Lyrians iridescent communication is the general mood and feelings of the creature.
On average, Lyrian males grow to be larger and stronger than the average Lyrian female who tend to take up positions of authority and diplomacy within the hierarchy of the royal-like pride. As the species demanded it, both males and females are raised to be leaders, hunters and fighters, but by the time they are ready to mate most females resign to communal caretaking and take up diplomatic positions in the pride, rather than continue a life of hunting and fighting for dominance. Despite their differences, males and females share physical traits which includes their excessively long manes that, in place of tails, serve as a source of balance in conjunction with their typical humanoid sense of balance. Lyrian manes can grow out as far as to touch the ground.
The typical structure of a Lyrian pride consists of a dominant "alpha" who acts as the protector and guardian of the large family-like structure that makes up the Lyrian society. As a whole, Lyrians are regarded as respected, almost royal figures amongst their peers with every Lyrian being respected by their own kind. The adverse effect of this, however, is that Lyrians tend to...outsource their labour to lesser, more unwilling species who act as servants to the majesty of the lion-like predators. With the lines of class-systems within the Lyrian pride being blurred, their lives are spent at the top of their own food chain, and they often spend their time hunting, gathering and providing for the members of their giant family while their less-than-willing servants are left to do unwanted jobs such as building the Lyrian's sprawling, eccentric cities.
Community is an extensive part of a Lyrians life as they are taught from birth that they are a part of a huge family. Going against traditional sociological standards, Lyrians live as though their entire pride is their family, and in turn, show their respect to one another by engaging in hygienic and systematic “cleanings.” This custom is very important to their culture, as it is seen that to have a dirty mane is to disrespect your heritage and, conversely, to have a clean mane is to present your standing within the hierarchy of the pride.
Lyrians who do wrong to their kind are seen as outcasts, often growing feeble and sickly from low social interaction and little, if any, grooming. In rare cases, Lyrians can grow so dysfunctional that they stop caring for themselves entirely, allowing fungai and fauna to invade their mane and grow uncontrollably.
Lyrians have an extensive desire to hunt, but that’s not always possible. Instead, young males and females can choose to participate in supervised brawls wherein they fight each other in one-on-one melee. This custom is heavily rewarded, with participants being showered in praise and affection despite whether they win or lose. Brawlers tend to take on a stylistic approach to their clothes, donning bandages around their palms and knuckles – a symbol of their strength and prowess. Centuries ago, these melees were conducted by antler fights where the fighters would lock horns to see who was the strongest. Alas, as the species grew bi-pedal their antlers were made obsolete, reverting to mere stumps atop their heads which grow smaller and smaller with each passing generation. Instead, two large whiskers extend from either of the Lyrians cheeks, providing enhanced sense of touch and the ability to more accurately detect vibrations.
