While I was walking 'cross the land,
I saw a pup sat 'neath the sun.
And wondered on his presence there,
So far from all and all alone.
I gave my thoughts a voice to him,
He did not even move his head,
But stared straight at the horizon,
While to me all these words he said:
'I've traveled far I've traveled wide,
Seen the worst and seen the best,
And now I feel a sunset come,
A time to think, a time to rest.'
'For all roads lead here, in due time,
If long enough on them you walk,
All paths will cross it's all the same,
So here I sit and here I talk.'
'And one day, one time you too will stay,
Alone upon this blasted plain,
When life grows long and power short,
You'll sit right down and here remain.'
His eyes were dull, his yes were sharp,
They saw more than I'd ever know,
I fled that place in desperate search,
Of somewhere, anywhere to go.
