Couch Kitties: Adirondack And Ruin?

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City-bound Amtrak train became disabled on the night before Thanksgiving, one of the busiest travel days of the year, when two of its cars separated. There were no reports of injuries.
Train 68, called the Adirondack, was heading from Montreal, when the train experienced what Amtrak called a “mechanical issue” just before 7:30 p.m. near Albany, New York.

The train was carrying 287 passengers and crew. There was no word on what caused the problem.
Of course, the denizens of the O Gauge Railroading forum knew what had happened immediately: The Lionel couplers ran over an uncoupling magnet, and the rest was history...

many, many years ago, when I visited Travel Town near Griffith Park CA, One thing that did catch my eye was a piece of octagon sided steel rod, about 3" in diameter and about eight feet long. One end had been flattened out and widened, then ground into a five sided shape with one end sharpened into a flat shape with a slight bezel. I joked with the Docent saying, "That is one heck of a big screwdriver". The Docent smiled and said, "Yeah. we use that to loosen the screws that hold the locomotive bodies onto their chassis."
Watch out for that middle rail.
Watch out for that middle rail.
When the Germans tried overrunning the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front during World War II, they confiscated some trains. The Russians built gadgets that looked like innocent junk on the tracks but could disconnect the cars from the locomotives as they passed over. Darned if I know how they worked, but a coworker's grandfather made a bunch of them, and they could easily be concealed under just a few inches of snow. All of a sudden the engine would steam away from its cars, leaving Adolf's boys puzzled and cussing.
