Oh god. I tried a new technique with this one and I don't think I'm ever going to do it again. I started in grey scale and then colored over it. It took forever. And I think it looks kind of lifeless. The shadows are too flat, I think.
Obviously still very rough. Nothing is finished on this one. I don't know if I can force myself to finish it. It was so frustrating, and I'm so sick of looking at it.

I think the point of starting with greyscale and then color is to build a foundation to work off of, not to have it be the solid base that's slightly altered after coloring... Much like how you roughly sketch gross lines so you can work on the real stuff on top of it.
The grey painting would only map out the gross figures, lines and shading areas, after which you color over it to refine and complete it, and then adding details. Judging by your before and after pictures here, you started detailing and refining even *before* you colored it, which is probably why this is taking you so long and looks lifeless compared to your other drawings. You already optimized the drawing for greyscale so altering it to color won't look right.
The idea is good, but I think you didn't execute the way technique is meant to work?

Yeah I've been looking at how other artists work (I'm not sure if you've heard of ImagineFX Magazine?) and I've noticed a trend in artists that basically finish pieces in greyscale and then add color over the piece on another layer set to 'overlay' or some other setting. They'll add blues and purples to shadows then along with other tints so it's not so flat. I just... guh. It takes so long. It really did teach me a lot about paying more attention to the form but... wow. I don't know where theses guys get their patience.
Also I just remembered they tint the greyscale after they finish it so the shadows aren't just grey

Do you think I can finish this? >___> I kinda love her hair, and I'd like to see what I can do with it. That is, if you have the .SAI or .PSD file. I only have SAI on my computer. If so, and if you really don't plan on finishing, I'd like to try. Not sure how well I can do since humans/elves are not really my thing, and especially dragons, but they're both things I'd like practice on :3
Other than that, I like it so far. Her hair is beautiful, and the whole scene is very cute.

Excellent! I'm sure I'll figure it out. :3 If it's small enough to be emailed, that'd be great. LittleLadyKix[at]gmail.com
