A rich little girl by the name of Vinera or Vinny for short had one day picked up a pup of what is usually a dangerous predator. Her parents however allowed her to keep it and with their money and resources provided the conditions for the animal to thrive on their grounds without problems.
The species is known as Leo Umbra, latin for Shadow lion. Due to their mane and the hairs at the end of their tails like a lion would have, and their black fur. During Mating season the tips of their horns will glow in the dark...the color being what attracts others of their kind and hopefully impresses them. But the horns are also very reflective in sunlight, often giving the impression that they glow. Leo Umbra are born with both male and female genitalia. Due to them not having many cubs, 2 at most and they are usually loners, often not even meeting another of their kind during mating season. It is more effective for both partners to be able to get pregnant, so per couple that finds each other you have up to 4 cubs.
They are smart creatures, and used to be sought after by humans, for their fur, their horns, there is all sorts of legends about their shiny blue teeth being a great aphrodisiac or their horns bringing good luck. Generally killing one is just very hard because they are ferocious tall and strong beasts, so owning their parts as trophies is also very common. That is why today they are almost extinct. One of the reasons Vinera's family was allowed to keep the cub when it was found, to raise it, to preserve the species.
The have been best friends. When Vinera was a child she found the Umbra she named Fenra (yes in reference to fenris) as a cub. And the two ended up growing up together side by side. Fenra being used to her presence doesn't attack her in any way. She is a tamed Umbra and in this image she is still considered an adolescent of her kind and will grow up to be 2 m tall, if you don't count the horns if she stands on her back legs. Which Leo's tend to do.
