The Mah-Kharu is neither slug, snake or leach. It is its own thing.
It is a aquatic creature and lives in muddy shallow waters where it lays still the majority of the day with the two longest stalks
sticking just above the water, sensing vibrations.
The two stalks on the nose are heat sensors and helps it see in a somewhat similar manner like our snakes just not as effective or fast. They kind of deliver the Mah-Kharu pictures of the heatmap around it ever 2-3 seconds.
The last two feelers are just feelers. Anything moving close, causing motion in the water, will aid even further in pinpointing the prey.
In dry times they will borrow down into the mud and simply wait for rain.
As long as the "gills" does not dry out it will be fine.
They survive for long periods of time without food by simply not moving. Preserving energy.
They do have internal ear too, and pet owners claim that the animal recognise their voice and thus will not bite them.
A wild one will always attack though as they will grab every oportunity to get food.
They lay their eggs(3-8 eggs) down in mud, where they are then left to hatch and have to dig themselves out 2 weeks later.

But it learns not to bitey the hand that feeds it, and gives it squishies? [the slug version of pettin's I suppose.]
Perhaps it's an example of....Familiarize, vs Domesticate.
one could say cats are familiarized cause they're still independant, and can live feral very easily, or be adopted just as easily.
And dogs are more domesticated, they have social behaviors gained, and lost from the wolves of wild.
[not strictly accurate but more familiar. one can familiarize a Tiger and it acts all cute, but it's NOT domestic, and can do unpredictable things. sheep...are domesticated. cows too. their bodies bred to suit our desires.]

I personaly consider cats to be very much domesticated. Yes they are good hunters and could manage alright in the wild(dogs do too if need be), that doesnt mean that it should even be a thing(in my opinion).
There is no guaranti that there will be a next meal, that they will manage to find a warm shelter on cold nights. There is no one to care for their injuries or medicate them from parasites. They will most likely live a much shorter and stressfull life.
Anyway.
It would be more like the tiger example.
Familiarized.
It doesnt really give Squishies XD more of just accepting beeing picked up. and i imagen its texture to be more that of an eel than a slug as it itsent really a slug.

I dont imagen them cowered in slime. at least not a amount that is notable to the eye.
If they would then it would be a very very thin layer simply in order to protect the skin from bacteria and parasites.
Slippery they would be though, at the very least as long they remain wet.
So maybe a salamander feel. Ive never touched one so i cant really compare.

he actually have 4. It is this guy here --> https://www.furaffinity.net/view/25734990/
*laughs* Yes, they did. They had both 5-headed and 6-headed shark movies (where this icon is from).
While as dumb as to be expected, using 4 of its heads as legs was an awesomely creative idea, even if they never explain how it survives out of the water for as long as it does. ^_^
A slightly larger and longer version of the icon (which I had to crop out frames from, in order to get it to fit into FA's limit).
