I’ve been Romancing DAZ-chan for a while now, if you know what I mean.

The problem with MMD is as you describe - Hatsune Miku is pretty much what you'd get.
I usually take the Logo that represents the Program and some of it's identity to create a character.
MMD is literally no logo (or a face of Miku) and it's about... Hatsune Miku dancing. Yeah...
Then again - I have tons of Software to work with:
Hexagon, Zbrush, 3D Coat, 3Ds Max, Substance Designer, Substance Painter, Wings 3D, Houdini, Modo, Topogun, Sculptris, SketchUp, AutoCAD, etc.
I'll probably get tired of doing them faster than I run out of software...
