"Our greatest sin was not realizing that we could screw things up SO badly."
For those of you who actually HAVE a life-
After 'winning' Civil War (tho by his on admission at Cap's grave, "it wasn't worth it") -Iron Man becomes Director of SHIELD and ran the Government's Superhuman Registration (meaning superheroes could only LEGALLY work under direct SHIELD supervision) and Avengers Initiative (Drafting anyone who develops a superpower to work for SHIELD) Through morally questionable and freedom limiting tactics- Stark hoped to keep the American public from turning against superheroes, AND avoid the inevitable Skrull invasion. ...bad move.
The Initiative actually makes it EASY for the shape-shifting Skrulls to infiltrate key levels of government and EVERY superhero team! ...and then the Skulls decide to have one big wide-open showdown with the remaining heroes even tho they could have easily won by avoiding direct conflict. And then Norman (Green f-ing Goblin) Ozborn scores a Headshot on the Skrull Queen, right on national TV, Ends the war, and becomes the great hero of mankind.
Ozborn gets total government backing to take over SHIELD, renames it HAMMER, buys-out what's left of Stark Enterprises, brings Stark up on charges of criminal neglect in the face of the Skrull invasion (at the same time stealing his hall-of-armor), receives access to a list of EVERY registered superheros' secret identity (including spidey), and the right to IMMEDIATELY terminate anyone suspected of being a Skull in disguise. (did everyone just suddenly forget how mentally unstable this guy is??)
Well, on his last day of work, Tony took the liberty of planting a virus to erase every Superhero identity from the Registration before Ozborn could read it. (he owed Spidey at least THAT much) However, there's one copy of the list left, due to his cyberlink with the Extremis armor- and it happens to reside in Tony Stark's mind! All Norman has to to is stick Tony in a room with a Psy-Ops agent, and it's over! So this leaves Stark on the lamb, without the tech or resources to build a new armor, from someone who's got an entire NATION backing him!
So Stark comes up with a plan to erase his own mind- but in order to finish the self-destructive procedure- he has to get to hidden armor cashes he's left around the world- Each with an outdated or half-built armor to help him to the next site. In the end, he reaches the Middle East- where he's left a refurbished version of the Original Iron Man armor! ("but wasn't the original armor built in Vietnam?" Shhh! they don't know that!)
But that's when Ozborn finally catches up with him, with his mockery of Stark's tech: Iron Patriot armor! ...Actually I'm amazed the ol' tin suit holds up as well as it did- vastly overpowered, with Tony's mind fadeing... Just long enough for the fight to get leaked to the Media- so everyone can see the Director of HAMMER beating the snot out of a nigh defenseless Iron Man. AND long enough that by the time Ozborn tears off his helmet, it's seconds before the mind-wipe process is complete, and a broken and bloody Tony utters to an enraged Iron Patriot:
"I WIN."
Tragically, the whole ordeal leaves Stark in a Vegetative state- no memories, not even knowing how to eat and breathe. This confirms my theory that he believes that the world needs Iron Man, but it DOESN'T need Tony Stark. But leaving a big question- he knew he was going to martyr himself from the begining, why go through so much trouble to not 'technically' kill himself??
I did however, notice that Stark's 'death' forced the Reborn Thor, New Captain America, and Pepper Potts (having donned the newest Iron Man armor) to meet for the first time. In defeat, Stark MAY have just orchestrated the end to the 'Dark Reign' saga!!
I tell ya, that ugly old Mark 1 armor never looked so good! ^^

I don't doubt he'd agree with you.
Stark can fix anything- except for people and relationships. Perhaps his greatest vice is that it doesn't stop him from trying. ^^;;
I'll still argue that inducting super villains into the initiative was good in THEORY. In many cases, it was the first time they'd been given something CONSTRUCTIVE to do with their abilities. I actually liked Taskmaster as a drill-sargent!

I actually only read a couple issues of Avengers Initiative. And hardly any of Thunderbolts. ^^;; I was seriously SHOCKED to figure out who Penance was. But I guess he woulda been right there when the New Warriors punched Nitro into a bus full of schoolkids. o.o
Heh, I have read outside the series enough to see EVERYONE line up for a punch at Iron Man after Civil War.

Well yeah, Iron man was the one who arranged it all in the first place. He may have wanted peace, but I think he got too corrupted as he tried to reach his goal. The lives of those children are on his head, along with the pain and suffering and paranoia, not to mention the persecution of mutants simply for being different. He has a lot to answer for. ANd I think that he will despite the fact that he's a vegetable now. When he dies he will have a lot to answer for.
Eh? He predicted such an event- but I don't think he CAUSED it!
Actually- that's a creepy thought cause Ironman DID hack the bio-frequency that Nitro uses to Explode himself... But Stark would have still taken steps to PREVENT so much loss of life! New Warriors already has the most tragic luck of any Marvel team- so this was hardly out of character for them...
I will admit, he TOTALLY screwed with Spiderman's life tho. -.-
Plus there's the assasinations of Happy Hogan, May Parker, and obviously Captain America. Was there any resolution to ANY of those events?
Oddly enough- in his will, Stark left THOR in charge of pulling the plug on his life support. Stark is kinda the reason Thor refuses to mettle in the affairs of Mortals anymore... he is SERIOUSLY pissed at ol' Shellhead. o.o

I totally get what you mean- In many respects, it DID collapse. The Death of Captain America certainly wasn't planned. But you have to wonder if it was ALREADY collapsing. Heck- in WWH, look how many people were cheering on the Hulk, as he was torturing heroes who, just hours before, were trying to protect those same people FROM the Hulk!
Ehhh, I can't recommend Civil War as all that great a read. :p
Granted, it DOES change the Marvel universe as promised... but i think this was a case of too many cooks in the kitchen. Too many differing opinions on how this story should be handled... not enough justification for the EXISTENCE of the registration act... Guess it had it's moments; the new Spiderman armor was sweet, and Titanium Man's role came as a shock. Overall, the story just felt mediocre- considering how epic it SHOULD have been.
At the time- I actually found myself caring more about the last Superboy Prime- Infinite Crisis thing... and I didn't even KNOW most of the characters involved in that! o.O
It might still be worth reading to catch up on Marvel recent events... but i wouldn't pay full price for it. ^.^;;

Whoh, someone ELSE who's read Hypervelocity?? Nice! ^^
It would be pretty wild if Tony 2.0 survived that explosion. You know, that's actually the Third instance where Stark's mind was a catalyst for a 'perfect' A.I.? Kinda makes you wonder if there's somethin' in his head.
Tho, honestly I've been intrigued by these Iron Man 2.0 idea's Stark's been alluding to over the past two storyarcs. Going on about airborn vaccines, combining the arc reactor more fully with human physiology, making the armor simpler and more efficient, using repulsor emitters rather than bootjets... actually it looks like most of these ideas went into 'Rescue' (Iron Potts?) Should be interesting. ^^

i do have to say stark makes for a powerful character, i have a hard time believing that this is his true decommission(though seems a rather epic way to go). though i haven't read civil war yet, what bits and pieces i've been able to get my hands on has been frustratingly tantalizing ><;
