The Warp Rat, another member of the nombit family (a family of six-legged, rodent-like animals), is unique in its ability to magically teleport.
Warp rats dwell in dark and subterranean areas, such as caves, lava tubes, and underneath houses and buildings (having a family live beneath your porch is considered a sign that good luck will come, but will quickly vanish in time). They bear large families, with males breeding with ten or more females, siring hundreds of young a year. Being scavengers, they will feed on almost anything- bugs, berries, dead animals, dung, garbage and, in times of famine, each other.
Their ability to teleport comes from the large "hump" on their backs, which contains a sac that draws magical energy from its surroundings, insulated by a layer of fat. When something startles a warp rat (which is not a difficult task), the rat's back-sack will inflate, swelling with energy before releasing it, teleporting the rat to another, hopefully safer, location in a blast of bright blue sparks and smoke. Because of their swelling prior to teleportation, it was believed that warp rats actually exploded when frightened rather than teleporting.
Warp rats only have moderate control over their teleportation: they can control when they vanish, but not where they end up, which often results in them teleporting several times before ending up somewhere safe. Their biggest weakness is walls: warp rats cannot bypass walls, and so if trapped inside a bag or box their powers are useless (though they will use teeth and claws as a last resort). The Eridon people are especially fond of them, trapping and breeding them for food. Besides their lean meat, their large, gleaming eyeballs are a delicacy amongst the Eridon.
Their back-sack, while inedible, is a powerful magic talisman, though it has a bad habit of vanishing when you need it the most.
