Quoted from information on Edwinish Politics of the Age of Cyborgs:
When a person is found to have committed a crime, the police break into their apartment, and torture them until they confess. They torture them until they confess everything, until confessing to acts of terrorism they never performed, anything and everything they would confess, whether it is true or not, if only to stop the horrendous torture. The police don't care what is confessed, only that there is confession. Then they are publicly killed. The public is instilled to hate the 'traitor', whom confessed to treason, terorrism, etc, no matter what their real crime was. It is making people confess to these crimes that solidify the Party's claim they are criminal.
Now consider the concept of 'doublethink'. Doublethink is the process by which someone, whilst knowing the truth, fervently believes in the exact opposite. For instance, if you know that World War II was won by the Allies, but fervently believed the Axis won, that is doublethink. It is so strong a belief, you would die defending the belief that the Axis won, and the Allies lost. You would never speak of the Allies winning.
The Party uses doublethink in media censorship and its own historical record. Whilst the members of the Party know they have altered the truth to make the Party seem perfect, they will fervently believe to the grave that their new version is the past, and no other past existed. The Party is perfect, because it believes down to every last member that its spotless record is the truth, and no other truth ever could have been.
If the past exists in memory, text, pictures or video, the Party alters them by destroying or altering records, and doublethink to convince that memories that were true are made false, and new memories replace them, and those new memories are the truth. In this way, the Party controls the past, present and future. Nobody inside the Party would ever overthrow a perfect system. That is the power of doublethink.
No major conspiracy or uprising can ever exist, because there will never be the understanding that there is something to conspire against. If one person tells another how they feel about the Party, they can expect to be handcuffed whilst in bed and carted away by night. They will not be seen again, or if they are, they will fervently believe in the Party. If they are not seen again, their house is cleared and put on sale. Nobody lives there. Nobody ever lived there. There was no such person, and the neighbours will believe using doublethink that there was never a person in the house for sale. They are vapourised, removed from existence, removed from the present, past and future.
Here are the five main government buildings of the Party in the Edwin's capital, Old Nottingham Town. As in all dystopias, the city capital is always enshrouded by rain, and spotlights.
