I thought Bambi is one of the more 'overrated' Disney movies. Another classic example on how they took some guy's book and made it theirs and now own almost all rights to it. Just like 'Whinnie the Pooh' or 'Aladdin' or 'sleeping beauty'. They needed to give us more original things like "Lion King" or something like that.
Well it's not like the adaptation displacement was aimed for... The bloody movie poster was a picture of the book after all.
Besides, it's very original. Most of the musical numbers are reminiscent of Fantasia in their form, and convey the emotion of a scene in an unusual, memorable manner. There is a lot less talking than is usual in any film, and it was the first serious attempt at realistically portraying animal characters - a huge milestone in animation in general. Finally, directorial decisions allow the movie to have the aura of a forest ina way a straight portrayal couldn't allow.
Just because a movie is based on something, doesn't mean it's not original in it's own right. Also, Lion King was based on Hamlet.

I agree with your points, I just hate how once Disney has ahold of something, it is like they Created it and Own all rights and merchindice and money related to that project. And at the Lion King being based on Hamlet, I didn't know that. It does share a similar plot line, but all I knew about The lion king was how they almost got sued for being too close to "Kimba the white lion" ... Your picture is good, I just hate Deer in general, since I see them every day on my way home from work. I guess Living in Montana does that to you. The majesty just becomes routine after awhile.
Yeah, the company is annoying. Like the time they sold off all their 2D animation equipment in a fit of idiocy.
But I like the films. *nod*
Bambi is... Prooobably my favorite, but I haven't watched them all. There are too many. XD Hunchback of Notre Dame is my second because of it's epic musical score and oddly dark tones. Probably would have tied for favorite if the ending wasn't so forced.
But yeah... Bambi relies a lot on visuals and atmosphere, so some people just won't 'get' it. It's probably not because you don't like deer, after all not that many people like ants but A Bugs Life and Antz are still rightly enjoyable.

Ah, a fan of the renaissance.
It's not just Disney that neglects their characters. Though a shame, the age of shorts is over, and seldom will you see a new short staring, say... Mac and Tosh.
That being said....
