I actually finished a project of mine? Incredible. Finally an actual reference.
So yeah here he is, the pointy protogen complete with disgustingly bright red fur. Luckily under actual natural lighting conditions it's a bit less 'my eyes are bleeding from this particular shade of red' and more 'that sure isn't the most tasteful red I've ever seen but ok.'
'What's up with these dumbass names?'
The 'Fruitcake' nickname comes from how ridiculous that red is, along with his tendency to constantly move about like a caffeinated pigeon.
The name Oblivion is due to two of my favourite games growing up- Turok 2+3, 'Beware, Oblivion is at hand,' and The Elder Scrolls IV, 'Close shut the jaws of Oblivion.'
'Why isn't he wearing a mask or armour in some of these pics?'
These depictions are non-canon and are for biological reference only- like all protogens, Oblivion would die without a mask unless provided constant medical attention. It would be like being skinned alive.
'So what's his deal?'
Oblivion is a prototype for mass produced mobility focused soldier units. The particular protogen manufacturer in question is not known for its immaculate standards, and often uses shortcuts in order to produce protogens as quick as possible, for as little money as possible. Oblivion received incorrect doses of hormones intended to speed the growth and maturation of units, leading to various defects including unusually long limbs, underdeveloped facial features, stark unnatural colouring and much higher aggression levels than intended.
The drastically reduced incubation and growing time was considered worth minor growth defects so long as combat ability was up to standard, however this left very little time for standard protogen social simulation. Reputable protogen manufacturers take an appropriate amount of time to grow and educate their units for their societal niche, assuring smooth integration upon deployment into the workforce. The decision to prioritise combat education over social conditioning during the short incubation period was officially recognised as erroneous due to the safety hazard Oblivion posed upon waking, as was the decision to not immediately destroy what is now considered to be a rogue unit. Having scored incredibly highly in survival and mobility combat drills, Oblivion was moved on to post tank training in an effort to smooth over personality anomalies.
Oblivion proved incredibly stubborn in all situations. While he performed well in survival and offence tests, social and compliance criteria were catastrophically failed. Focus shifted towards containment rather than training when he began actively trying to escape during drills, throwing what could only be described as violent tantrums when caught. Any attempt to approach by staff or machines were met with aggression, rendering them unable to provide maintenance or replacement parts. Oblivion's skill set was deemed ultimately unusable, and he was left in an AI monitored containment cell.
Officially he died in that cell. The incident in which he disappeared from the company's records coincides with a factory wide incident concerning widespread power outages, destruction of multiple assets including incubating and hibernating combat units, training facilities and parts storage. Multiple ground and security staff casualties were reported. These events were attributed to outside terrorist activity by enemies of the company's funding parties. All incidents and sightings concerning an oddly moving red protogen are expressly denied to have anything to do with the company.
(Please note that this character was created before most of the official protogen/primagen lore was written. Any discrepancies and vagaries are due to either lack of information in 2017 or my subsequent lack of time to update and streamline with newer information. My apologies.)
'Hows he work? Give me that sweet sci-fi shit.'
First off, all credit to
Malice-Risu for brain birthing how protogens and primagens are supposed to work, and allowing me to apply a healthy dose of science gone wrong. Cheers mate. (see below for a link to the official protogen and primagen guide)
Biological characteristics:
Like all common protogen, Oblivion possesses two forelimbs, two hind limbs, a tail, two ears and near colourless blood, muscle fibres and organ tissues. The yellow hue seen in his flesh, blood and mechanical systems comes entirely from nanites, nano machines that essentially replace the native blood cells in most protogens. The strength of colour and glow produced by nanites varies by their density within blood vessels or tubes and by how obscured they are by surface pigment. As with most protogens, Oblivion's internal organs are unaugmented bar the assistance of nanites in processing oxygen, breaking down items consumed, waste management and tissue knitting. While internal sexual organs are present, protogens are not intended to breed naturally and are therefore sterile.
Oblivion's skin is largely a highly pigmented black, with some sections of bright red skin on the face, ears and palms. While mostly very short, his fur is extremely dense and stiff- especially around the neck. The black hyper pigmentation of his skin, bones, teeth and claws was an intentional trait chosen by the manufacturers to increase durability in soldier units, along with the exaggerated barbed claw shape.
Unlike common protogens, Oblivion also possesses a number of growth defects and mutations. These include a severely shortened upper jaw, underdeveloped nose structure, barely functioning first and second eyelid, entire lack of lips and thin elongated ears, limbs and spine. These cause problems such as being unable to blink without use of the third eyelid, relatively more fragile limbs and minor balance issues when standing at full height. Internal anomalies include an unstable endocrine system, hyperactive metabolism and some underdeveloped mental faculties. Symptoms present due to these are heavy mood swings with a tenancy towards violence, erratic movement, frequent speech stutter and the inability to comprehend most social conventions despite performing well in logic and problem solving tests.

Very sorry for the late reply- did you ever end up making a protogen? I'd be interested to see your idea for one! I've certainly had a think about more character concepts but never had the time to put anything to paper. By now I think most ideas have been well enough explored that I've felt there's not much need for me to do so, but if I ever go back and expand on Oblivion's lore I might make accompanying characters.
Surprise surprise, I never actually explored the idea like I originally intended. My reaction was thanks to your unique take on a Protogen design, and maybe in the future I might see about my own take. The world has already seen a couple of Avali based Protogen visor characters.
Haha yeah when I was testing colours I thought 'hey this is looking pretty carnage/4 tailed Naruto' and figured why not test those colours out? Ended up pretty alright I suppose, for what is effectively a mashup of many of my favourite design choices in creatures (pretty heavy anime and horror influence) though I'm really thinking of changing it up in a less eyebleed direction. Even though I intentionally chose that shade of red so that he's mildly uncomfortable to look at.
Please excuse me if that was too much info, I've been thinking a lot about my design choices in art recently and your comment was right on point. I hope you enjoy the picture anyhow, maybe I'll draw some actual symbiotes in the future haha.
