So I have been learning Cinema 4D and loving its hair module as well as an awesome SSS shader I downloaded. I am normally a Maya/XSI with Mental ray renderer so this is way outside my normal knowledge base. But the tools are pretty easy so it hasn't been that hard. I will hopefully make some fast progress now that I have this initial test to make sure I can make hair and have SSS in a good render.
Modeled in XSI and rendered in C4D. Thanks to Gonk for the inspiration.

Hey very cool ressults with this one man the shaders is looking very good already and the bread is especially nice. I`ve never used cinema4d myself but it looks promising.
Is the hair / fur simulation for the beard heavy for the processor like in maya? i`ll be looking forward to see more thingies from you.

Actually it renders hair much faster than any other program I have used including Maya, XSI, Lightwave and 2 max plugins. My hair count was around 150,000 hairs. Until I added subsurface scattering the render only took about 2-3 minutes depending on how accurate the shadow maps I used. The subsurface scattering actually added a good 8 minutes to the render LOL. There are so many settings for everything I am sure I am not optimizing the final output right. I bet once I am done I will be able to shave 4 minutes off the final render. Glad you like it so far. I am happy with it. The hair in C4D is amazing.
This looks great, especially the fuzzy small hairs where the beard ends, very lifelike - Have you ever tried Shave and a Haircut for Maya? Is the cinema4d system even faster with hairs? Also I would be really greatful if you could send me a link to the SSS shaders. Maya keeps letting me down, perhaps I should really take a more closer look to C4D...
If you are using the Fast SSS shader in Mental ray for Maya I would honestly say to stick with that. The SSS shader I am using is really nice but it has way to many settings and is touchy. It is not easy to use. It is the only skin plugin I know of for C4d made by Vreel. But then again I am totoally new to C4D so I am having a hard enough time just using the program. Maybe if you already know C4d the hair shader would be easy... Who knows!? If you are looking for the best hair tools so far I would say try C4D out.
Oh, I forgot to say that I have used Shave and a Haircut for Lightwave, Max and Maya. The guy that created Shave helped create the hair for XSI, Max and Cinema 4D. But C4D's is the newest and has the most tools. It also renders crazy fast. It destroys Mayas native hair and is superior to XSIs. Its been a few years since I used Max's hair so it could have changed since then but the 2 hair solutions I used in the past aren't as good as C4Ds. There are still 2 obscure hair plugins for max I haven't tried yet and Modo has hair that I haven't tried. C4D's hair is the best I have used so far. I am going to be doing eyebrows and eyelashes next, then a hairstyle on the head. If that all goes well then bodyhair.
