Lancer's got a weird design, and I can't really understand if he's supposed to look like some kind of animal with a mask or a skeleton, but I like to think the black part is some kind of empty hole (yes, even if he's pictured with eyes at one point). :'p

The design is really interesting. For a time I thought the upper spade part was a shadow cast by his hood (as his eyes might have proved), while the lower part of the spade was his nose, giving him a doglike face which, given Toby's designs, might be intentional.
But then again, after seeing his dad, I don't think he even has a hood that can cast a shadow, as the blue "hood" seems to be part of his body. And in one instance during his introduction, if you refuse to listen to Ralsei when he wants to tell you about the prophecy, Lancer identifies himself as the bad guy from the prophecy, describing himself as "the guy with a teardrop shaped head", so it's really a part of his body.
Very interesting design, there might be many interpretations, I like all of them. ^-^
