Rant incoming...
Ok, I'm fairly sure I did a post with some links to this, involving 'young adult' novels and their translation into film (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/21296118/). Some, seem to go along well. LOTRs introduced a huge epic journey to people (lets be fair to the makers, they may have missed a lot...but there WAS a lot to cover in just a trilogy). Harry Potter had decent runs, aside from Phoenix for some reason, I guess the director.
I suppose I'm reminding myself that there are at least a few book-to-movie adaptions that come out right...because it's certainly looking like one I was looking forward to (which I've posted a little about - http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12987744/) is being dragged through the dirt for no good reason at all.
Artemis Fowl.
For those who don't know, head over to this previous piece (link). In short, AF is a series of books about the criminal genius, Artemis Fowl II, a young man who started with the absurd notion of stealing gold from a most unusual prey, Fairies. From there, his encounters with the Fairy Folk involve said heist, goblin rebellions, a rather psychotic pixie inventor, demons, and time travel (don't worry, not too much heh heh).
I LIKED these books. The characters and story are done well, it makes me laugh, I have a good time revisiting them every once and awhile. It's a writing style I could get behind if I ever decide to get into book-making.
Then again, maybe it would be easier to get into directing, considering they can screw up SO MUCH of a story that is literally a script as-is.
A little history. See, originally Artemis Fowl WAS going to get a movie...that was years ago now...but it got...shall we say...put into development hell due to 'certain issues'. Lets just say the only good Harvey is a Bollock and leave it at that.
Anyway, EVENTUALLY, it was brought up that the film was going to start going again. Yay! Something to look forward to! The books have action, suspense, emotion, comedy, everything to make a good film!
If you're a fan of AF from the early days, your books more than likely have the publisher logo of Scholastic on it. But, if you're a recent-ish purchaser...you'd see Hyperion....
AKA, DISNEY.
Yep, Disney...is making the Fowl movie. Ok. Ok. They got Star Wars and they did ok, I guess. Animation-wise, Wreck-It-Ralph is doing well and...
..........Judi Dench is playing Julius Root.....?
WHAT THE @!$(@#!!!!
Ok, so this was a long while ago as an announcement, but it is STILL a huge blow to the book! I swear, HUMANS developed this gender-swap thing...we never did this crap back home!
I mean ok, sure, Judi's great in her roles. Honestly, I haven't seen too many outside of James Bond, but I hear good things and not going to say "oh she's terrible", because I don't think she is....
But...NO. You see, first off, there is NO REASON to do that. Oh sure, could claim there's not enough females in the story...but that is a load of dwarf wind. Holly Short, the female fairy officer, and Artemis' foil, is a driving force in the series and an AWESOME female lead! And hey, look at that quote there from the Artemis Fowl official graphic novel....Holly's the FIRST female officer in a recon squad! This makes her want to prove herself both to Root and her herself in everything she does. It's CENTRAL to her character!
So what happens when you turn Root female? Well guess what, Root was in recon himself way back, part of the chain ladder. Which means, if he was female, Holly is no longer that first female officer. Holly, our strong female lead, loses ALL (or at least a HUGE portion) of what drives her character. So not only does it screw up Root, which is a shillelagh between the legs to a great commander who...never mind spoilers, it ALSO screws up Holly. Good work Disney, by pulling in more female rolls, you destroyed the main one of the whole series.
Honestly, that alone makes me wry of the film. Just doing THAT for no real reason is just...an insult to the characters....
...then the trailer dropped...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXlBep9uFjI
I didn't see it till a week or so later because of all the projects and the like I have going on...and honestly, I shouldn't have looked. I mean, it got my hopes up....and suspiciously so. See, the whole first half of the trailer is with random extras and main characters in shadow. They're HIDING things from you. You may think that's a little conceded, but to fans, you'll understand why.
We get the usual spiel of Fairies having been driven underground by humans, though that in itself isn't so much a problem, and we get show shadow bits of the characters...and then a nicely done reveal of Haven, the main underground city of Fairy kind. Honestly, it look pretty good. Maybe a little more futuristic than I expected, but hey, they're advanced, so go figure.
Then we see something...I GUESS...is from Book 1, a set of scenes I remember all too well that started the affair. Artemis and his mountain of a bodyguard, Butler, aim to find a Fairy in Ho Chi Minh City. Though this....Fairy...just...umm...I don't know...think that LOTR elf-witch person in tons of silk being put on pull-strings. I mean...wow...certainly...more active than the book...
Around this point we get a shot of Artemis, played by newcomer (name). I'm all for undiscovered talent, but naturally I'm wryry of a newbie playing someone like Artemis. But, I'll give'em a shot. He's got the stone-faced look about him...he might not be...perfect (like a Thomas Riddle in Chamber of Secrets), but what the hey, willing to see how he'll do.
Then we get a reaction shot of him and Butler backing away as the 'fairy' rises into the air with robes fluttering like some kind of weird lotion commercial.
...ok umm...how to say this...just look at the trailer...look at my comprehensive image above...and you'll understand the problem.
Clarification? Um...getting someone with Bulter's massive bulk is hard to do, so I'll give'em that. But umm...Bulter is Caucasian. Eurasian to be specific. How...how hard is...I don't know, if they couldn't get Root's gender right, I suppose race isn't in the ballpark either. I mean honestly, is this for that racial diversity thing? Essh, humans are pretty petty when it comes to that huh? Imagine how it is back in my home planet, now THAT'S diversity for ya.
Add in such things as stuff that's not even IN the books (Butler with a BOW? Where'd THAT come from!?), Holly, an adult female elf, being played by a 12-year-old (but like Artemis, giving her a chance), and showings of Artemis being in the thick of battle with a rifle (though he does start to learn pistols in book 2, though is not much for it), and being described as a warmhearted individual.....and I just...jeez....
I don't...I just...ugh. I suppose I'm not as disappointed as I could be. It's only expected that over half the things you look forward in life WILL disappoint you. I guess maybe I'm tired of decoding stupid decisions of those with some kind of power. I mean jeez, Disney owns Marvel, Lucas, and will soon dominate streaming (know people care about that)...they can take anything they want and screw it up completely, and KNOW people WILL see the movie.
It's like a thing between those who know the material, and those who don't. I'm sure people who've NEVER heard of the books may enjoy the movie in it's entirety. It may not be that bad in the end of them. But for those who DO know the books, DO know the characters, changes like this are like a punch in the face. It's like their stories, their personalities, ALL that makes them them can be altered, and people who don't know better will just accept it.
It's really sad if you take the time to understand how those who know the material feel. You can either not care, take interest, rage, settle, an all manner of different routes to take. Right and wrong doesn't really matter in the end. Really...it's just integrity. And from what I've seen, personally, it looks like Disney doesn't have any for this great series...what a shame. At the very least, Disney put it's name on it like a brand...so you can say this movie ISN'T Artemis Fowl....it's DISNEY'S...Artemis Fowl...similar, but definitely different...
*claps hands* Alright people, so any other book-to-movie adaptions that fell short for some bizarre reason? And, on a positive note, any that's felt to have actually succeeded in some way? And yes, I do mean book-to-movie adaptions, not comic-books, that's a whole different subject for Marvel and DC fans to debate on heh heh.
