History: Liam Malone grew up as the son of a coal miner. His mother tried to provide for them, but as his father become ever more ill, she found herself stretched thin as she attempted to make ends meet while caring for two boys. Always seeing his parents working themselves to exhaustion just to scrape by, Liam tried to help in whatever way he could. He would do chores around the house to make life easier for his family and he would do various odd jobs around the community for whatever they would pay him. By the time he reached high school, his father was frequently bedridden due to his bad lungs and the Malone family often struggled to even acquire basic necessities. Despite his father's protests, Liam took a job at the mine to sort coal from rocks after school and on weekends. However, the mine was a good distance from the school and Liam wanted to get as many hours on the clock as he could; so he started to skip his last class of the day to get an early start at the mine. Halfway through his freshman year, just as he was about to skip for the day, he was called to the office for a phone call; it was his mother calling from the hospital that his father had passed. Devastated, Liam wandered outside in a haze and began to have an emotional breakdown which led to him blindly throwing a rock. That rock happened to shatter the window on the truck of an army recruiter who had stopped by the school to encourage students to enlist in the army. Fuming, he approached the kid, intending to scold him, only to have the boy breakdown crying and hugging him for fear life. The army recruiter took the time to help Liam work through how he was feeling and made him a deal, if Liam stuck around for all his classes and came to the base to do menial janitorial duties to pay off the damages to the window, he wouldn't press charges. Liam agreed to these terms. Everyday after school, Liam would get picked up by the army recruiter, brought to the base and put to work scrubbing floors, clearing weeds, and washing vehicles in the motor pool. Then he would hike his way home, making it to bed shortly after midnight. He stopped working at the mines, no longer able to manage it and school with his new duties at the army base. Through it all, he got to know the army recruiter and grew to enjoy the structure of the military. When he finally paid off the damages, Liam had promised the man that he would join the army and make him proud. The recruiter told him that he was sure Liam would. At 18, Liam graduated high school and enlisted in the Army, just as he promised.
