On the Imperial Star Destroyer, Vector, an experiment to create a nerve toxin was being conducted to fight the Rebels called "Imperial Bio-weapons Project I71A" or Project Blackwing. An accident occurred when moving the contained toxin, causing the gas to spread throughout the destroyer, infecting all of it's crew in a matter of hours. If there were any survivors, they wouldn't have much time left before becoming victims of the "Sickness".
