Being a big, bad owl is wonderful. You have power, yes. You have the size, the mass and the strength to impose your will on anything and everything in your path. But there's more. That bulk, that great power is coated in feathery softness, adding even more comfort and warmth to the owl's already pillowy form. Once a preything is nestled against it, they can't help but feel some deep comfort in the earthy scents and the bed-like embrace. Some part of them will feel that wonderful gut and simply know...this is home.
It's easy for it to go to an owl's head. Knowing how sweetly prey snuggle inside, the outside world just seems so cruel in comparison. Sweet little morsels struggle all their lives out there, facing so many awful dangers. Worse, there are predators who don't appreciate their prey like the owl does. Ones who would treat them cruelly and perhaps send them down in pieces. Such an awful thought, a preything meeting their end out in the cold, or struggling in the harsh world until they're old and grey.
An owl belly just seems better. A warm slide into bliss all around, then a cozy forever as part of the perfect owl. So when a prey struggles, it's not that they shouldn't be eaten. It's that they just don't understand. Not like an owl does. This sweet little squirrel's desperately clinging to its old life on the outside. He doesn't understand. He doesn't know what the owl does. He can't see how awful his life is sure to turn out. But that's alright. After a long sway in the owl belly, he'll never want to leave.
Or at least, he won't be able to say otherwise.
