I'm... as y'all know, one of those people whose utopia would have no sexual or artistic hangups about porn, whether who's making it or who's consuming it. I think of porn as a social thing... a bunch of my friends make it, we comment on it, and I think it's just kind of sad assuming that, just because you watch porn alone and never tell anyone, that it's meant to go lonely and untold.
That said, taking the consensual porn out of any social media site is a one way ticket to sites where people are afraid to be interesting. Free your mind and your ass will follow, all. I don't want porn to become as boring as hollywood became (or mainstream porn, for that matter).
Yes, there are theoretically other sites where I can see dicks. But I don't have one where my friends would be comfortable posting them. That's what we're losing.
They may be a private company, but in this day and age all tech becomes naturally monopolistic, and that brings with it, if not certain responsibilities, certain pressures, I hope?
The original poem by David Morton was about the end of WW1, but I think of it a lot. Especially as it pertains to the internet.
THE KINGS are passing deathward in the dark
of days that had been splendid where they went;
Their crowns are captive and their courts are stark
of purples that are ruinous, now, and rent.
For all that they have seen disastrous things:
The shattered pomp, the split and shaken throne,
They cannot quite forget the way of Kings:
Gravely they pass, majestic and alone.
With thunder on their brows, their faces set
toward the eternal night of restless shapes,
They walk in awful splendor, regal yet,
wearing their crimes like rich and kingly capes …
Curse them or taunt, they will not hear or see;
The Kings are passing deathward: let them be.

I love that poem.
You're absolutely right that this is a loss and a possible blow to the advancement and relaxation of the status of porn in our society. But I also don't think we need to worry about losing weirdness on the net. People on the net are always going to be weird, in every corner they can. Look at FA, IB, FF.net, Ao3, etc.

You so often right and so perceptive, i wish you could reprogram my shitty angry brain that comes up with nothing constructive.
When a massive faceless corporation (Verizon) buys an artist platform like tumblr, they are sure to ruin it for the sake of advertisers. Capitalism is miserable bullshit.
