One of the roots of The Fandom Tree has passed on. Fred Patten was so prolific and accomplished so much in the science fiction fandoms, Anime Fandom, and the Furry Fandom; that there is not enough room here for a summary. He was instrumental in bringing Anima to America; he helped form the Furry Fandom form in the 1980's, he wrote the histories of Anima and Furry. Fred Patten was one of the moving forces in the Furry Fandom. I leave it to you to explore the treasure of his many books, articles (1000's), and histories of Furry Fandom. Below are a few sources to start your treasure hunt. The treasure is easy to find, it is everywhere.
Fred Patten's extensive collection of Furry articles, comic books, graphic novels, and other materials has been donated to University of Riverside, Special Collections and Archives in Riverside California.
It is no exaggeration to say Fred Patten was one root of The Fandom tree. May his enthusiasm for the Furry Fandom live on forever and ever.

Furry Fandom
“According to fandom historian Fred Patten, the concept of furry originated at a science fiction convention in 1980,[5] when a character drawing from Steve Gallacci’s Albedo Anthropomorphics started a discussion of anthropomorphic characters in science fiction novels. This led to the formation of a discussion group that met at science fiction conventions and comics conventions.”
