Crocodiles make for very capable lifeguards. They're strong swimmers and have excellent vision, hearing, and smell to detect when something is amiss. Though Tarvash tends to be pretty strict when he runs his beach. No littering, no campfires, no loud music, and definitely no fireworks. Break the rules at your peril.

Minor piece of trivia, the article of clothing Tarvash is wearing is a traditional Russian garment called a Telnyashka, traditionally worn by soldiers and sailors but also occasionally by lifeguards in sunny southern Russia. :}

Heh, now you have me wondering what he'd do if one were to break the rules. =P
He looks very good in this drawing. I like the idea of a crocodile as a lifeguard, you're right, they're basically perfect for the role! I can imagine him saving some poor mammal who ventured too far out into the water.
