Paddling thru world cover- Taylor against the Shadow Dragon
OVERCAFFEINATED-PARANOIA CommissionedOriginal- http://www.furaffinity.net/view/29614985/
A cover that I had my favorite Darkness artist do for me, a description of the monster in a more detail way, to show what Taylor is really facing throughout his adventures in my eventual comic series.
Heres the quick short story I used to help described the commission for her-
It was the middle of the night. The sky was clear, showing the beautiful night in all its brilliance. This world was near the center of the galaxy that it inhabited, and so the heavens were filled with a large field of stars and closely-placed nebulae that glowed with radiance. The world’s singular moon was close enough to the planet, that its presence was a sight beheld by the planet’s residents. The moon enveloped its part of the sky with its own glorious light, its surface riddled with vast dark spots by ancient seas of cooled lava, and embedded with deep impact craters with streaks of dust strewn across its celestial surface.
Taylor the Darjeet was traveling through a section of thick, unkempt woods, trying to reach the center where, he was told, lied an ancient set of decaying ruins, present in the middle of a large, grassy clearing. It was an old keep lost to time, with not much of it left standing except for a few half-broken walls, as well as overgrown vines covering most of the remaining structure. The darjeet was seeking a power source that had re-emerged in the middle of those ruins, an energy that had cast him into this world just weeks earlier. He had detected that it had returned, and it was calling him to come forth, and travel through into new, uncharted realms and planets that weren't even set in the same universe as his home, taking him deeper into fantastic places, along with dangerous situations as he learned how to better himself.
Standing right on the outside of the clearing, so close to his goal of escaping this strange place, Taylor heard the roars of a deranged beast high above, a large creature consumed by an unknown entity of immense power. The creature howled in rage as it spotted its prey that had bested it just days ago, preventing it from finishing its hunt upon another feral drake. It was, itself, once a magnificent furred and feathered fellow dragon, before the darkness had claimed it as its own and ordered it to hunt its own kind.
The original body had died as soon as the essence of smoke had enveloped it through every fiber of its being, taking control of the body and enslaving its soul. With the body no longer requiring sustenance, it lived off of the magicks of the darkness to sustain its physical form. Nevertheless, the body still decomposes over time; its flesh slowly degrades as it’s consumed by the power in its long enslavement, with the result of the thing becoming a hybrid, a decomposing undead smoke monster powered by dark, unknown energies.
The monster was waiting for Taylor; it knew he was going for the strange portal at the center of the ruins. It could sense the energy source as it came in existence, and it could also smell fear, desperation, and the most dangerous of emotions: pride. Brain activity of fleshy creatures emit these feelings as short bursts of electrical activity, that get broadcast across short distances, and the monster could pick up on these signals.
In this case, however, it was terror that the monstrosity had scented this time. Taylor had fought this thing once before to save that one drake’s life, but all he was able to do was distract it long enough for that drake to escape, and Taylor himself had barely managed to escape it the first time, unable to inflict any damage to it other than annoyance. Now, it was in between him and his way out of here, and he would have to fight it, or at the least try to find a way to get past it.
Frightened, yet determined to stand his ground, Taylor reached back, and from his personal drake's-harness, he pulled out his paddle. It was a large, handmade wooden ore that was the only thing left of his late mother. It was also his preferred weapon of choice, and he had learned how to fight with the weapon and disciplinary tool back in his youth.
He was barely able to get the paddle out just as the Monster dived towards him from out of the sky. It extended its claws from all four limbs, reaching out in its attempt to snag the Darjeet, to kill him and convert his husk to the ranks of the army of darkness.
After all, dragons were their preferred creatures to hunt, as they were amongst the most powerful of the resistance to its conquest of worlds, and yet, its most powerful tool to use against its enemies for the entity’s end goal, to consumed all things, materials, life and eventfully, reality itself until nothing left of existence remained…
