I think I just find myself attracted to Media with simple or vague canons because that means there is way more for me to play with and develop myself without the restraints of canon. Like how since I was a child I've been all "If I grow up to be a manga artist I want to do a Manga adaptation of Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg; whose plot is 'Kid and friends get isekai'd to chicken land and become chicken themed magical girls-er... boys+1girl... Billy saves his friends, the chicken elders, and stops the crow army. Then he goes home. The end!' I'm gonna make it a story about courage and friendship and also Billy really needs an edgy shadow the hedgehog type rival because once his friends are saved there ain't much going on for story pacing drama..."
Plus the more unique stuff I add the more of a complete story it feels like. Like Shiro Amano's (A favorite artist of mine) SE adaptations for example! In his Kingdom hearts manga series it feels almost like I'm missing something while reading. That something is the game of course but his KH manga feels a little too... narratively "On Model" and stiff because it is trying to adapt a JRPG's story into a manga. His adaptation of Square's Seiken Densetsu: Legend of Mana though is a super fun adaptation that let's him go a bit wild and crazy, change some things, the main character will do almost anything for an FF8 Quitis Trepe doll, He digs through a pile of poop with a spork in hell, etc. All because the plot of LoM is..... a loose side quest simulator. It allows for a lot of playing wild and crazy with the story being told!
