Within the Romuin empire live many of their kin from various regions and they are generally treated more or less as equal citizens, with exception of the centaur who are thought to be of impure origins. They are also more simple in nature, only possessing a crude language and culture with a few rare exceptions who have greater intelligence than the rest of their kin.
Furia is one such an individual and while she did not fit in well with her herd she remained with them nonetheless as it was the only family and world she knew. Then one day there was a battle near their territory which caused the herd to flee but she stayed behind, curious about all the commotion. She didn't quite understand the situation at the time except that it was bad with the air thick with the scent of blood and death. After watchign the battle move closer to her hiding spot she decided it was best to move away from there before anyone would notice her and she slipped into the woods, paying attention to the sounds of battle growing more distant.
It wasn't long before she picked up other sounds within the woods and eventually almost quite literally stumbled across a wounded Romuin scout. At first she did not know what to do, simply staring as she stood over him, untill his eyes shot open and he seemed to reach for her which caused her to bolt. However she did not get far before she paused and turned around as she listened to his voice. She did not undertaund the words at the time but it seemed to her as if he was pleading her to come back and help him. While she wasn't sure how she could possibly help she cautiously moved back to the clearing thinking why she would even take such a risk. But as she got to the edge of the clearing she arrived just in time to see the scout's persuers standing over him, kicking and threatening him with their weapons.
She didn't move at first, frightened of the situation, but as the man's cries grew more desperate and pained it was as if she moved by instinct before she even realised and che charged right into the clearing, trampling two surprised soldiers and vanishing between the trees again before the others even knew what happened. She turned around again, picking up a large branch, and charging back into the clearing knocking out one more soldier before the rest finally realized the situation and turned their attention on her as she stood protectively over the wounded scout, wielding the branch like a club.
The soldiers began to advance and trying to encircle her but she sensed their intention and quickly turned and and charged at one of them, wildly swing the branch which connected with a soldier's head and knocked him out and as another ran up intending to strike her down from behind she bucked and kicked him right in the chest, sending him flying several feet against a tree. After this the remaining soldiers lost their nerve and made good their escape while Furia chased them off a short distance before turning back to check on the wounded scout.
She found him still alive and breathing but barely concious. She watching him for a few moments unsure of what to do next, wonderign if she should just leave him since none of this concerned her and why she took such risks in the first place, perhaps some maternal instinct had made her do it or something else as she did consider him briefly as a wounded foal before dismissing the thought as she gently nudged him with a hoof. It took a few nudges but he came to his senses again and propped himself up against a tree with much effort to look upon the scene in confusion. Here was a centaur watching and standing over him with several of his attackers dead or unconcious on the ground, yet it didn't seem hostile towards himself.
Mustering what strength he had left he slowly pushed himself up agaisnt the tree, grunting in pain which caused the centaur to take a step back, untill he was on his feet again supported by the tree. He found himself staring right into the centaur's eyes who seemed to be curiously watching him with what seemed to be concern. He tried speaking to the centaur again but as expected it did not seem to understand so he gave up and tried to walk, intending to make his way back to camp on his own, however he only managed to limp a few feet before stumbling to the ground in pain. Feeling his strength fading he wasn't able to get back up again and instead tried to crawl untill suddenly the centaur moved over beside him and he suddenly felt himself lifted off the ground by a strong arm.
Now on his feet again he stared in confusion at the centaur holding him by the shoulder still, he then gestured in the rough direction of his camp speaking softly and slowly again but not holding any hope the centaur would understand. "I...Need to..go home...that way." as expected the centaur did not respond, though it briefly broke eye contact to look in the pointed direction for a moment. Then suddendly the centaur started moving in that direction, allowing him to support himself against it's shoulder much to his suprise. They walked a while in silence before exhaustion completely overtook him and he fell to the ground again. He barely had enough strength to roll over and look at the sky, a view that was quickly broken as the centaur leaned over him with a snort. He caughed and managed to smile briefly as he reached up to pat the centaur on the hoof weakly.
"Looks like this is it for me afterall...I don't know who you are and I can...hardly believe one of your kind would try to help me at all....too bad the others won't be hearing of this adventure of mine this time..." He coughed and looked up at the blue sky visible between a break in the canopy " At least I won't die alone...so I'm grateful for that, even if you don't understand me at all." He then closed his eyes, preparing to give in to death's embrace, but it wasn't a cold embrace that came to pick him up and guide him to the afterlife as the centaur lifted him up once more and carried him in it's arms as it trotted off as fast it could towards the direction he lest mentioned.
Furia carried the wounded man through the woods and across the plain, stopping only a short distance outside the Romuin encampment where she placed him down and retreated a short distance while she waited and watched as about half a dozen soldiers emerged from the gates to collect him. She waited untill they were back at the gates before finally turning around to head home herself, however she didn't get far before she found herself beign chased down by Romuin cavalry who quickly cornered and captured her and placed her within an enclosure which doubled as a makeshift arena. She was held there for a few weeks like some kind of zoo exhibit as soldiers would come and watch her and have amused conversations. though she was not mistreaten at durign this time all as she was fed fresh fruit and vegtables twice a day, and any soldier who dared to throw somethign in her direction was quickly reprimanded.
Then one day she finally saw a familiar face again as the scout was finally recovered enough from his injuries to walk around on his own. She watched as the man exchanged a few words with his commanding officer and then walked around the pit and down the gated ramp. She hesitated a moment and then trotted over to him with a whinny to greet him, glad to see he was better. He stopped two paces in front of her, starign into her eyes for a few moments before giving her the Romuin salute with an "Ave". She just stared at him as he repeated the salute a second time after which she shocked the crowd as she roughly imitaded the salute and spoke "Ahffeh"
Since then she had remained at the encampment even though she had been offered freedom again, and slowly learned to speak the Romuin language and customs, eventually even being trained and oficially enlisted as the first ever centaur scout and ambassador for the centaur herds She was also given the name Furia Bruttia which roughly translated to "fury of the wild brutes". Though it would be a long while before any other centaur would join the ranks of the Romuin army but longer still before they would be considered citizens of the empire, that is to say those wiho showed enough intelligence, the less mentally apt would either be left alone in the wild or still kept as beasts of burden at worst.
Furia would serve a long time, teamed up with the one she resqued that day and they made quite the good team, earnign her quite a bit of respect even amongst those still skeptical about the centaur and their worth to the Romuin empire.
