Since last weekend Frankfurt has the first fully electric busline. Line 75 is a relatively short busline between Bockenheimer Warte (where 3 subwaylines, one tram line and several buslines meet) and Campus Westend of the Frankfurt university, but its a beginning. The busses are brand new Solaris Urbino 12 electric busses. Solaris is a polish company that produces citybusses, trolleybusses and trams, their busses are the standard busses of Frankfurts public transit for years along with Mercedes and MAN busses. The electric busses run quite smoothly, inside you hear the silent whine of the electric engine instead of the puckering of a diesel motor. There is no rear seat bench, instead a box in which the batteries are located. I think this is an interesting and important step in the right direction for public transit.
