9. Robotnik Claus - Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3_pfuMTkm8
Let’s go back to a simpler time, when the internet was young, Youtube was less prone to removing videos and a simple audio edit to make a man sound like he was saying ‘penis’ could provide hours of entertainment. Sure, one might say it was the dark ages and they’re probably right, but there was a quaint charm that Youtube Poops delivered that I sorely miss.
Truthfully, the same could be said about the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Back before the subject of a hyper kinetic neon blue rodent was likened unto the same level of importance as a religion and wasn’t treated like it had betrayed all of our childhoods for daring to not age well, there was this sweet era where Sonic got to have fun with the stupid concept it always was and none showed that more then this show. Sure, there were some super cringey parts in it, in fact the titular character himself was probably the least entertaining part of the entire show, but where it truly shined was in it’s miraculous handling of the character of Dr. Robotnik.
Much like other shows before and after it, it was a case where one truly watched it for the misadventures of the barely competent villains and with the gloriously grotesque art direction of Milton Knight and the hilariously over the top performance of Long John Baldry, this “PINGAS” obsessed fat man became the thing of legends… to a niche community on the internet, but hey. I thought it was funny! In the end, the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog’s take on Dr. Robotnik is just something that can never be replicated and will forever be my favorite interpretation of the character in a very non-ironic sense. While most of my entertainment from this character came from Youtube Poops, my choice to add him was pretty sincere as the episode where he poses as Santa Claus is one of my favorites.
So remember, happiness is all so much more enjoyable when it’s followed by misery~

So I can imagine something like this happening.
Someone walking downstairs, hearing some rustling, they try to see who it is, not wanting to alert the crazed individual inside their home. Only to find someone in a costume, placing gifts under the tree, his thick and protruding red mustache is obviously revealing through the fake white beard.
The fake clause looks at the person, and chastises him "SnooPINGAS usual I see! And on CCCChristmas too! " He always had that elongating lisp of words.

Heh rather late to this but recently I have been watching the old AOSTH cartoon again on Youtube (you are pretty much spot on on how some of the fans, perhaps even me, have sometimes been obsessing about the franchise as we grew older) and Dr Robotnik is definitely one of the highlights of the show. Both thanks to the voice actor but also how expressive the animation of the character sometimes is.
Perhaps a dumb cartoon now but I still have a certain fondness for it.

The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog falls under the same category as the Pokemon anime. You watch it purely for the villains, as everything else is pretty lame if not full out cringy but at least in the case of Sonic, they full owned up to that and gave Robotnik as much screen time as possible. It's definitely a shame that his voice actor died as to me, Long John Baldry will forever be the definitive voice of Robotnik. Milton Night, the art director of the series has gone on record as saying that Robotnik was his magnum opus when it came to animation and constantly made sure he was more and more over the top with him, especially when accentuating his butt. I don't know if he still does, but I know at one point Milton Knight did black velvet paintings of Dr. Robotnik which I would love to own.
Yes the villains are really the highlight of the cartoon, in particular Robotnik as Scratch and Grounder are the typical idiotic henchmen who screw things up most of the time while Robotnik gets to be delightfully ridiculous sometimes with his ego and temperament. (and expressions)
Sonic has his occasionally moments but he is pretty much the epitome of the 90s kids hero and can be a bit obnoxious.
It has been a while since I played any of the modern Sonic games and I don't really watch the cartoons so I don't know what the voices of the other Robotnik voice actors are like, but I can understand when you say that Long John Baldry's voice was very fitting for the character. He played it very well.
I looked up Milton Knight after watching some of the episodes. I remember some of his work that appeared in the old Archie/Mirage TMNT Adventures specials.
I remember the art and the stories being very atypical compared to the main comic and a lot of the other specials. Not in a bad way but more like the TMNT being guests in a completely different comic or cartoon.
It is really unfortunate how his career went as I think he deserved a lot better. I found out about his eviction and some of the problems he faced in the last years through a AOSTH fan page.
BTW, would you happen to know if Milton Knight did only Robotnik's design or also other characters? I can't find any information on the subject.
