They'd been at the stronghold for 4 months now and Yenji's training had significantly improved over that time. At home, King Wryvern had paid many of his military's officers to train his son on how to fight, yet each officer he paid failed. Yenji was a slow learner and weak, often testing their patience when he struggled to even roughly mimic what they told him to do. He was too weak to carry any of the swords properly and often fumbled or moved in unbalanced, jerky movements. He was scared of the officers when they got angry as their patience left and the fear prevented him from wanting to learn. But, in this stronghold with his personal guard Eygon training him, he learned. The sword was quickly discarded and he was given a polearm which he held naturally. His diet was changed under Eygon's command and he was made to exercise so he may be more efficient. At first, Yenji was scared to ask for Eygon's training, all those bad experiements weighing on his chest; but what else could he do? They were stuck in a stronghold until the end of a war. He saw how worthless he was when they were ambushed on the journey. He was scared, fearing the reaction of the blond man when he failed, yet he wasn't stupid. And now, 4 months later, Yenji spars and hones the skill Eygon taught him. Looking over his polearm and then at the tone that presented itself on his stomach and arms, he'd smile. When he got back home, he'd challenge the officers who gave up on him, show them they were wrong to call him a lost cause and make his father proud.
