This has been part of my project all of last year in making my own fantasy world centered on gryphons. The key points to my interpretation of the species is their ability to utilize elemental energy (what you would find as traditional RPG magic) and their connection to the natural world. I've detailed their biology, ecology, life history, intelligence, society and culture, and relationships with the other species. Although I have a particular story in mind for these creatures, I do not plan on writing an extensive novel or detailed scenarios. I hope this inspires others to create more elaborate and unique gryphon species.
