5. The Grinch - How the Grinch Stole Christmas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Hj3U18FHgQ
C'mon. We ALL knew we'd be seeing this green mug sooner or later but a Christmas icon like the Grinch can't be used all willy-nilly, Hell take a look at Universal did to him... Twice! That's evidence enough in my book. No, ole Mr. Grinch in my book can place no lower then within the top 5 and if it weren't for my own personal tastes having a handful of pseudo-Santa's I like more, he'd definitely place even higher if not straight up no. 1 ...but the hurt from Jim Carrey and Benedict Cumberbatch are still too fresh for me, so he's gotta be bottom rung of the Top Fivers.
Yeah yeah, I'm hating on the live action and CGI versions of the Grinch pretty hard and that's only because they're steaming piles of garbage but hey, if you like 'em more power to ya! I kid... sort of. Call me a hipster or a purest but nothing beats the original cartoon. It was perfect the way it was and will forever be one of my all time favorite Christmas specials and every subsequent remake-(as well as every other terrible attempt Universal has made to rape the works of Dr. Seuss)-entirely missed the mark of the original source material. Yes, I know it's just a children's book and I shouldn't act like it's the corner stone of our civilization but I just find something very sad in the fact that most today think of Jim Carrey when they think of the Grinch and not Boris Karloff, but I digress.
I'll always have a special place in my heart for the original version of the Grinch. That's the way I like it and if you don't, that's fine too. Whatever traditions you hold dear during the holidays are yours to cherish and I can't stop you from enjoying them, nor would I ever try. I think we can all agree that regardless of what incarnation it is, this green git's antics are always a delight to watch. So enjoy 'em however you wish.
