This needs a redo. It looked a lot better than this. Oh well. When I have time, I will.
I am very thankful to
rah-bop for letting me use one of her photos for reference. I will try to do better next time!!

Really? The wings, I think, are actually the most accurate part, save for the coverts being a bit not lined up in the exact same way as the reference, and the scapulars are not wide enough (something I want to fix). And a few other feathers are not exactly in the right place. The pose is just how the eagle at the aviary was posed, and the lighting is the same. I had to make the wings look somewhat good since it's for an article on drawing wings. :3
The feathers and relative shape is well-done, it's just the positioning that's weirding me out.
>_<; I'm not sure how I would adjust it. Extend them a bit more, perhaps?
Well, good luck with your article D: sorry if I wrecked everything.
It does look very nice, I'm just a bit peevish, that's all.

Ah the pose! Well it is very spot on to the way the eagle was at the aviary. Maybe Rah Bop will let me upload the photo to show the fellow. Animals are pretty good at posing in ways that we don't consider as "right" or possible. Anatomy is a pain that way!
Aw there is nothing to wreck. It's done and sent in! :3

This is quite a natural pose and wing position for these large birds. This individual had just been napping and preening, then he held his wings partially open for quite some time (15 minutes at least). My photo is in a slightly different angle as I was standing next to Rah_Bop, and it was Rah_Bop's photo that Vantid referenced.
But still you can see... http://featherdust.critter.net/seaeagle.jpg
Portraying correct bird anatomy often means being familiar with that bird's habits, even the stranger ones. :)

The picture you sent as reference appears much more natural than this, unless I'm looking at the art wrong. From the look of it, the sea eagle is turning it's head around and it's wings are still at it's back, and in the pheonix picture I see the bird facing frontwards, with the wings folded awkwardly at the breast like that.
But if I'm just seeing a different picture, haha, then I'm an ass.

I see why you may think it needs some re-working. The flames do look to be on the rushed side... However, they still look realistic! When you step back, the colors are spot on! I love the detail work in the eagle's head. If you wish to re-do this piece, go ahead. But, this will surpass anything I am able to do at this time! In short... I love it :)
I adore the feathers in general, but on the shoulders just below the head especially. You did a Fantastic job conveying how the light plays around the edges, making them brighter but not outlined. There's so much potential energy in this picture, I feel like I wouldn't be surprised in the least if the eagle suddenly stretched back and out with a great big sweep of its wings!
I saw first two "kyrie eleison" pictures at jour LJ, an they were amazing. The final picture is a bit chaotic to me; because of fire on the bottom and the longer feathers on the head of the phoenix. These two elements disturb the reception of the drawing a bit.
I love this picture anyway, just because of the light, mood and anatomy.
