Everything isn't evil^^ chapter 22
Thankfully the weather was clement. The breezes of the wind also brought a refreshing touch, yet her face was covered in a thin layer of sweat, fortunately – or unfortunately – hidden by the fall of her long hair over her face. It became quite an annoyance the fifteenth time she had to blow them away.
How stupid she had been; she should have attached them before lifting this other woman on her shoulder! She usually was more thoughtful… so unlike her… but then, she couldn’t be blamed of forgetting some basics in situation of panic.
“Come on, Jozie… You once carried a one hundred kilogram wasted guy across the city, you can do this…” she muttered as self-encouragement.
The best was, she didn’t even know who this girl was. She woke up, on a plain, and she was with her… The woman seemed young and pretty sick. Her limbs looked weak to the point Jozie wondered if she would have even been able to walk by herself. She was pale. And most striking, she hadn’t woken up… Her vital signs were correct though, steady breath, regular heartbeats… It was like she was sleeping, but it would have been closer to a coma.
Alone in an unknown place, Jozie naturally wanted to seek for help. But at the same time, she couldn’t have left her, or even hidden her efficiently. The only option had been to bring her along…
But it wasn’t as bad as it sounded. Jozie wasn’t the kind of girl basing her strength on talking and make believe. She was straight forward, and had often be called a tomboy. She had to give them credit, as her usual response to this was a punch in the guts, followed by a question about whether this was feminine enough.
She wasn’t weak, and wasn’t afraid to take down men if she ever had to. This didn’t bring her lots of friends, but the few she had were worth it. Masculine attitude or not, her way of being never felt the need to change, and brought many advantages. Like the ability to carry this woman herself instead of passively waiting for help.
She was the kind of woman who understood guys’ pleasure in being proudly independent, strong and respected for being true. And that was probably why she was, in general, more at ease among male friends. Once the douchebags skimmed, she never was disappointed in the loyalty of the rare that stayed.
“Come on, girl. We can do this.” She said, this time as an encouragement to the sick woman she carried. “Soon you’ll be taken care of by good doctors. Then you’ll be fine. And you’ll ask me, how can I ever thank you? And I’ll reply, oh, it was nothing. By I take good numbers on a check if you insist. Joke aside, don’t die on me, that would make a less funny story… Oh? Hang on, girl, I think we’re it!”
Further away on the land, she distinguished a silhouette coming at them from the mountain. She had been right to assume that natural edges would be favored by people to build their town! She couldn’t see well because of her hair masking the view but she hasted her pace into this direction.
Soon enough she heard a voice asking with concern.
“What happened?”
“I don’t know, I just woke up to some place and she was there, unconscious. I was looking for help.”
As the man released her from her weight, resting the woman on his shoulder, she noticed he had something attached at his waist. A sword? Where had she fallen this time?
“We need to get her a place to rest, sheltered from the sun. And water, she seems a bit dehydrated.” The man commented.
This voice… She knew it, not exactly the same but she recognized the tone, the rhythm… With her hand freed, she pushed her hair aside and took a look on their rescuer. Genuinely concerned about the lady’s state, he didn’t seem to even notice her. Always the same…
Jozie smiled, it was such a joy to recognize a familiar face in her situation! He had seemingly changed a bit, but she had absolutely no doubt it was him!
“What are you doing here, you old bitch?” She asked in a chuckle to his attention. And surely it rang a bell, because he froze and looked at her with a funny face. “Adam? Adam Grimbelt? Come on little shit, don’t tell me you don’t recognize your old pal? Jazzy Jozie! And if you call me like this only once, you know your balls will climb up your throat. I still hate jazz!”
He was a bit cold today! Usually, some good old teasing and joking put him into a better mood. Or at least made him replied in the same insulting tone. It was part of their dynamic. But this time, he kept looking at her like he saw a ghost.
“Or… Josiane Campbell, like the whisky? You remember me, right? You make that heavy joke all the time… Oh god what is that?!”
She instantly left the woman to Adam and got into a defensive stance as she noticed they weren’t alone. Two monstrous reptiles were walking into their direction. Horns, wings, quadrupedal… were they what she thought?! Curiously, they seemed alerted by her stance and stopped right where they were, looking at her hesitantly.
“Do you… know her, human? Is she safe?” one of them asked with a female voice. To which the other promptly corrected.
“Adam? Is she safe?”
This one had a more masculine voice. What was that? They obviously knew him, one of them spoke his name. Had he tamed these creatures? They seemed as afraid as she was, and in the middle of that, Adam only looked at her in silence, inspecting her coat.
Oh yeah, it was his... But was that a time to focus on clothes?!
“Adam! Stop being a bitch and tell me what’s happening!”
He rose a finger, as to instore silence. Like he was boiling, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. When he looked at her again, there was a pain and an anger that she never saw in his eyes before. And in a calm tone, like always when he was on edge, he whispered a question.
“What is the funniest joke in the universe?”
No doubt it wasn’t an innocent question. It was an accusation. But an accusation she couldn’t understand. What did it even mean?
“You know it would be clearer if you went straight to the point.” She replied, irritated.
“That is my point. If you ever want to be funny with me again, you first tell me what the funniest joke in the universe is. That’s what you owe me.” He spoke coldly, taking the unconscious woman with him and walking away. “Just don’t hurt anyone else and we should be fine…”
Jozie had no idea of what just happened. He was mad, obviously, but for which cryptic reason? It was the most annoying with him, to manage to get into his mind… By everyone else, did he mean these creatures? Whatever he said, if they attacked, she would defend. Why did she even give it all a thought anyway?!
What was the point in entering his delirium? When he was like this, the best was to wait until he cooled down.
“They are safe, and under my responsibility.” He announced to the dragons, then at her. “And you, come in. You’ll find out that these reptiles are not the ones to be feared around here…”
