You have to do it with a metal rod, as I learned in Survival training. Works on sharks, messes up their senses or something like that. A gentle tap is all it takes, but I guess if you were without this highly advanced metal tubing...you could always punch them in the nose. It'll anger them, but they won't be able to see you for a while. Never had to do it, but I'm pretty sure it works...
