She became the most interesting character in STH #146 where she and Sally switched bodies, and then in #151 when she gave herself a body. After that her character development made me fall in love with her. She is not only my favorite Sonic character and female character, but she is also one of my all time favorite anthro characters and one of the most unique.
I do so hope that Ian Flynn and IDW can try and bring her and the others back.

I agree that Nicole is a pretty unique furry anthro character and (thankfully) a heroine. I also like that she isn't similar looking to the other sonic girls. Though I'm not necessarily a fan of sonic stuff and never have been. But when I saw some beautiful harem/genie girl artwork of Nicole earlier this year and with Tails, I looked up more info about her and where she came from in the Archie comics.
On what you said about "bringing them back", things like this are the real reason why fan art (and fiction) exists. It's what allows you to see your favorite characters in the way you yourself wants to see them. Even if the world stops caring about those characters :))
