Wonderful Christmastime
Here's a short story I wrote for my friend
pmdfan85 for a Secret Santa thing we had going on at our Discord server! I based it around his favorite Christmas song, and this is also my first piece involving TF, hope I did well.

This is the story of a young man named…
Oh, it turns out his name isn’t important. We will just refer to him as “Ghost”.
This is the story of a young man named Ghost. It was a Christmas season night, and as a rare treat, Ghost was alone at home. No annoying siblings running around yelling nonsense or any construction going on, interrupting his free time. Just peace and quiet.
Ghost was on his computer, just kicking back and talking with several of his friends on Discord. Today was one of those rare days where the server was particularly active, with people talking, and posting nonsense, and roleplaying all around. Things were going very well and Ghost couldn’t be happier. Well, no sense wasting this silence, right? Ghost reached over to the speaker that had been recently gifted to him by a close online friend, and set it to play some music. One of his favorite seasonal songs, of course.
His belly grumbled a bit. Huh, he had been so distracted on having a good time, that he had forgotten to eat something. Telling his friends that he would be back in a moment, Ghost set the computer aside and headed over to the kitchen. Maybe this was the perfect time for a nice sandwich.
Walking over to the fridge and checking inside, Ghost briefly considered just having a Hot Pocket...but no. Such a precious alone time should be used to make a nice meal, although one that didn’t require too much effort, of course. Pulling out a bag of pepperoni and a jar of mayo, Ghost got to work, humming to himself all the way.
“Huh…?” A loud noise outside interrupted his sandwich-making. It sounded like something heavy banging on metal. Maybe a cat or a raccoon toppling over a garbage can? Couldn’t have been anyone else, he was alone, after all…
Unable to shake that nagging feeling off, Ghost licked the mayo off his fingers and headed over to the door, opening it and peeking outside. It was dark, aside from a few streetlamps, but there was no apparent source for the noise.
Yeah, maybe it was just something that passed by. Just as he was about to close the door, a slight breeze hit him in the face, sending a shiver down his spine. “C-cold...” He hurried to close the door and stay warm inside.
Returning to the kitchen to finish his meal, Ghost returned to his computer, sandwich in hand, closing the door behind himself. Sitting down to tell his friends he was back, and about the noise he had heard, several people just replied telling him to stay safe, that it was probably nothing and “oof”. Chuckling to himself, Ghost gave his sandwich a big bite and began typing a response for the roleplay he was taking part of.
And then the lights flickered a bit, and everything went dark. Well, mostly everything. His laptop stayed on, thanks to the battery. Sadly, the same couldn’t be said about his Internet. Dead.
“Really? A friggin’ blackout?” Ghost groaned, wiping his mouth from bread crumbs and mayo. Aiming to notify his online friends, Ghost reached around in the darkness, trying to find his phone. It took him a while, but he managed to locate the rectangular device. Waking it up, Ghost tried firing the Discord app up, but...no cellphone signal. “What, really?” He whispered to himself. “Who screwed up this time?”
The lack of electricity made itself more than apparent soon. Silence, a deafening silence, only briefly cut by the slight shuffling noises Ghost made on his bed. Deciding to get up, maybe see if other houses lost power too, the young man got on his feet.
Something brushed his leg. Ghost instinctively lifted his right leg, a bit taken aback. “Wah!” He thought. “...that stupid cat...did it get inside…?” That made the most sense to him. He couldn’t see much, really. It was so dark, not a light coming in from outside. Holding his phone in his hand, he tried setting the flashlight on and pointing it down.
Nothing. There was nothing there. Still unsatisfied, he pointed the light all around, trying to locate the pet that had likely snuck into his room. “Come on, get out...” Ghost tried convincing himself that he wasn’t scared, but it was harder the longer he was stuck in such a deep darkness. In fact, he wasn’t even sure it could get that dark in there…
He began walking to his door, remembering he was going to check up on the rest of the houses. Opening the door, he headed out of his room. Just as dark, just as silent. He pointed his phone all around, but there was no sign of anything around. As he reached the front door, he reached over to open it…
...and his phone went dark.
“Oh damn...” He tried turning the flashlight back on, but as he brought his phone close again...something touched his leg again. “Stupid cat, get off...” Ghost kicked his leg, trying to scare it off...but his leg wouldn’t budge. “Huh?” In fact, both legs wouldn’t. He was stuck to the ground. “Fuck!” He struggled against the unknown hold on his limbs, as he rushed to try to get the light on his phone working again, and finally he managed to. Hurrying to point it downwards, Ghost saw something he wasn’t expecting.
It was a shadow. But not exactly a regular shadow. It was something dark and blobby, that seemed to swallow the light shining on it, holding on to his feet, rooting him on the ground like a plant. “Holy shit, what the-?” Ghost began saying, when he noticed the blob climbing up his legs. A strange cold feeling accompanied it. It was clear it was trying to encase him...or...eat him? Going into a panic, Ghost tried hitting the mass with his phone, but… “Ow!” His blows were going through the threat, ending up hitting his own legs. “Get...off!” He insisted, uselessly, as the thing covered more and more of his immobile limbs.
The light on his phone flickered again, strangely just dimming down this time. As soon as it did, the creature moved faster and worked its way all the way up to his waist, bringing more of that coldness with it. Darkness...darkness helped it go faster. But Ghost had no way of slowing it down. Half of his body was engulfed by the shadow, which kept him still. Ghost was shivering, and he could tell his breathing was coming out with little puffs of smoke. What a way to go, eaten by something unknown, and alone, and to think he was happy being alone earlier…
The dark blob had reached his chest, the cold penetrating right into his core, but...he suddenly didn’t feel like freezing, more like...the cold had turned into his normal temperature. As the shadow creeped over his shoulders and arms, he ended up dropping his phone, and with that, the last of his light sources went out. Even though it would make no difference at all, Ghost closed his eyes tightly and held in his breath. And so the shadow engulfed him completely.
Silence. And nothing.
…
The lights in the house flickered back. Several of the appliances in the house could be heard rebooting, and the streetlights could be faintly seen working again through the windows. But Ghost’s eyes were still closed. The speaker beeped back to life, resuming the song it was playing right where it left off.
Ghost opened his eyes, his house all around seemed...normal? Like nothing had happened. What was that? Had he just hallucinated that whole ordeal? Was this a prank? Maybe he-
Ghost looked down to himself. Something had changed. Or rather...he had. His hands were different. Instead of the pale skin tone he was used to, they were...purple? “What…?” He reached up to touch his face, but it felt different as well.
Ghost ran to the bathroom, intending to look in a mirror. He was soon faced with his reflection...except that wasn’t his reflection. “Holy...fuck...” On the mirror, there was the face of a baffled being of some sort. It had deep purple skin, red eyes and big cat-like ears. That was...him. “No way...” His brown hair had been replaced by spiky black hair. His glasses remained on his face, except they now rested on his nose, which was now thinner and more animal-like. Looking down, Ghost noticed his clothes were unchanged. Reaching under his shirt, he saw the purple fur-like skin was also there.
Ghost walked back to his room (but not before returning to the front door and picking up his phone), still utterly confused by whatever had happened. Noticing his laptop on his bed, he picked it up and began typing, intending to tell his friends about what had happened. Then, he stopped. Would they even believe him? He still did.
The responses came in soon, of course most of them were of confusion and disbelief. Ghost’s new ears lowered in sadness, but he then had an idea. Pulling up his phone, he decided to do something better. He opened the camera app and pointed his phone to himself. He took a photo. Rushing to check it, he then noticed...the picture had come out with a strange purple fog around it, somewhat obscuring his shape, alongside some strange artifacting and glitching. Ghost let out a loud sigh and fell back on his bed.
His laptop dinged, and he noticed a Direct Message coming in, from one of his friends from the server. He sounded excited, beginning to ask him countless questions about his change and asking if he could go and visit him. Ghost rolled his eyes and began typing out a reply, smiling. He also took this moment to begin thinking about the new irony of his Internet nickname. As he began considering changing his name for real, he heard a car pulling into the house, soon followed by the front door opening. His smile soon got replaced by widened eyes of realization.
“Oh...shit.”
