Another image from early 2009. Some of you may recognize this from my livejournal. I added a quick background for web display. The image itself is a simple spot illustration for my next how-to-draw book, the content of the book being centered around dragons exclusively this time.
This image sits alongside a unit on ways to tear and tatter your dragons wings. Obviously in this image the tearing is excessive and would impede the dragon's ability to fly!

I prefer actual environments for my backgrounds... but I went simple because I have so many spot illustrations that have been created for the new book, that adding backgrounds to them all would be very difficult. The spot illustrations are simple "cut out" illustrations that sit on the page alongside the tutorial units to give readers an application of the thing the unit was talking about, and more fun art to look at at the same time.
The simple non-illustrated backgrounds take less than 10 min to put together, so I figured it would be a nice way to display some of the spot illustrations on the web. A little bit nicer looking then a page full of dragons with a white background.

First thing - @.=.@ Oh my god you replyed! *Honoured*
Second thing - Ah yes I can tell you seem to like the environmental backgrounds, I remember once reading that you say It's part of the Dragons background and should be added to give It more of a compliment? I can understand what you mean by having too many backgrounds, making It all too time consuming. Good on yah as well~ I'm pleased to hear about your new book! ^.=.^ Ah so these Spot Illustrations a new addition to things? New to me, you've just taught me something.
It's nice to mess around with simple backgrounds ya know, It's like the "big boy Dragons" with heavy detail deserve something more of a background then some quick skimpy Dragons. o.=.o; I blame Apple for the simplicity style, but perhaps one or two white pages with little quick Dragons would be nice to see..
