FA only accepts FLV format (Flash video) for videos. GIF format is very, very inefficient, very lossy in terms of color and resolution, and takes vastly more space. It is the worst possible "video" format, being that it is not actually a video format (it is an extension tacked onto a very old still-image format). GIF has very rudimentary compression (RLE, if I recall correctly). It has no relation to MP4 whatsoever. FLV supports H.264 encoding (allegedly). Of course, FLV being the only acceptable format means that no videos on FA can ever be viewed on most cell phones.

Yep. All my stuff starts out as .avi, after which I convert to mp4, then I have to explode its size to convert it to ancient gif. FLV eliminates accessibility to mobile users as well, so basically I just keep cranking down the resolution until it fits a massively inefficient format into the super small 10mb file size limit.

I thank you for this. I'll take an inefficient gif for compatibility over flv which I can't view on mobile if it's a simple animation.

GIF is ancient, limited, and inefficient but it isn't developed by adobe or saturated with security flaws like flash.
