Sending out 2018 with a bang with this bigass watercolor of my favorite anime. Sailor Moon was hugely influential for me, and I hope I can do it justice with this picture. I love Naoko's art, especially in the color artbooks she released. I wish it wasn't so hard to find original copies. I was hoping that Bandai would re-release them for the 20th anniversary but no dice. I KNOW the colors are't 'right' on her fuku, but I really wanted to incorporate some of the yellow/green from her super form. Maybe I should paint that one, too. >__>
I forgot to clean my tools well enough after experimenting with some gold paint, and her hair ended up with flakes of gold in it. Oops. I said eff it and mixed iridescent media into the paint for the background. Her white fuku also has some shimmer to it so it's not so bland. There is a ton of glitter and sparkle on this picture that doesn't show up on the scan. I'll get a photo when the owner gets it framed and everything.
2018 was the year of not making bullshit excuses. Hopefully 2019 can be even more productive.
Happy new year, everyone!

Naoko Takeuchi, the original mangaka for Sailor Moon, originally wanted Usagi to be a little on the chubby side. She mentions it in the liner notes for her artbooks. Galaxy Express 999 was a big early influence on her, and Leiji Matsumoto drew all of his women 'tall and sexy', as Naoko put it. She laments that she ended up drawing her to be much taller and thinner than she originally intended. Naoko wanted a heroine that was closer to her own body type. I drew Usagi to be a little meatier out of respect for Naoko's original design intentions. So yes! She is pudgy! It's very much on purpose :)
