This beastie actually resulted from a dream I had (suffice to say I woke up quite disturbed, but hey, here's turning that into a positive experience.) The critter in my dream actually had a face, but I thought giving it a mirror in the place of a face would get across the fact that it mimics every move you make in a very eerie manner.
The mirror beast - a species of mimic - inhabits ancient temples, acting as guardian to lost secrets. Scholars theorize that they are born out of the chaos caused by falling stars, due to the celestial markings on their limbs (not unlike those found on the god-messengers throughout the land's temples), but their actual origins are a mystery.
While the smaller mirror beasts are little more than mischief makers, the elders of their species are among the most dangerous beasts alive. While their mimicry seems to start as nothing more than a game between themselves and the victim, eventually it becomes the mirror beast who controls the action of the individual, forcing them to mimic its actions instead. Many tales have been told of adventurers possessed by strange forces, throwing themselves off cliff edges seemingly against their own will whilst a group of mirror beasts sat with their hands held to the sides of their heads, as if trying to listen for the impact.

That's a pretty cool idea, I would have put an ornate frame around the mirror that fuses with the creature, maybe even given him a whole square mirror with a frame as a face. :D
Generally, I would guess this is the case. There's no real memory of them being specifically assigned as guardians, as most temples already have different beasts serving that purpose, they seem to have just taken it up themselves, or perhaps created and given the duty by some other being. They're usually found in places where there are relatively dangerous things kept, and perhaps it is this reason that they are not affiliated with any specific god; the things they guard are often things that should not end up in anyone's hands.
No, they definitely have a purpose. I suppose they just get a tad restless sitting in dank temples for years.
Yes, they have a bit of trouble dealing with groups if they encounter them. Very rarely will you find more than three mirror beasts in the same area, and not often do those occupy the same room. Only able to control one being at a time, a pair or group of people would definitely be the way to go.
