You already know how to make backgrounds ;) The sketch you did for me has a really cool medieval town scene in it!
In all seriousness though, I'm terrible at backgrounds. I absolutely can not draw a background unless I'm IN the background. When I was in Alaska I did a ton of hiking and took my sketchbook with me a few of those hikes, and I went from backgrounds like this to backgrounds like this right here in one single attempt. If you want to learn to sketch backgrounds, give some hiking or something a shot, it helped me a ton :)

Ohh wow, I can't wait to see it when it's finished. It looks great! I especially love the mountain view out the window - would do anything for that view!
Also, that's a great idea for taking an easy step into backgrounds. Having an indoor setting makes things simpler, and with the window view lets you do a smaller bit of detailed outdoor background without having to put a crazy amount of effort into it right off the bat. Great idea!
