Was feeling a bit uninspired this morning, so decided to do a bit of a warm-up.
I hate scanning a picture in and then going "oh this is wrong". Typical problem that is still in the picture. In any case, skunk practice since one person gave me some rather helpful advice in the last picture, and of course, had to draw my favourite skunk :3

I'm sure this must drive you crazy to hear, because this is just a random throwaway practise sketch, but uhm.... I love it. You've got the exact perfect look for this species, and the roughness of the traditional media creates the illusion of fur much better than it would coloured.
The only quibble I'd add is A) possibly a deliberate style choice, B) often out of your hands where someone else's characters are concerned. But if you find yourself doing just a random skunk...
The striped skunk Mephitis mephitis doesn't have a pale belly - just the stripes. It's hard to find a good picture, but here's a profile: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:S....._not_a_cat.jpg Not a trace of white underneath, there.
Which I personally think makes it look suitably awesome to get jizz on. Contrast! :)
Again, many skunk characters seem to have already been drawn with the white belly, so that's kinda out of the artist's hands, I know. And I'm one of the last to argue that every single member of $SPECIES should have exactly the type markings of that species in Nature as we know it. (My avatar doesn't, for instance; he's got a middle stripe between the usual two.)

Most of the Skunkies I know have a belly stripe for the simple reason: it breaks up the all black belly fur. Especially on fursuits; its damn near impossible to get a good pic if there isn't the belly contrast. either the head washes out, or the body blends into the background. Works the same way for art as well.
You are most certainly correct when you say that real skunks don't have the belly color, they don't need it. it would turn black anywat sicne they are built low to the ground. But, then again, there are different colors bred into skunks now; just like goldfish, you can get plenty of color patterns and shades of furs, from black to champagne gray. We ain't just plain black n white anymore! :)

It's sometimes difficult to get good-contrast photo even with the white belly :( Also, it makes drawings a little bit more interesting, since except for the 'bred-in' colors you were mentioning, it's just black, and white as far as markings on your typical skunk furry drawing. Also it makes posing a touch easier since you can put something like a paw or an object in front of them as a white background instead of a black one.
Most pictures of real skunks I've seen show their bellies as functionally pink due to skin and thinner fur down there compared to the sides and top, like many cats and dogs and soforth. I wish there were more pictures of skunks drawn with thin hair and pink belly, it'd be a nice break from all the white and black!
Also, I think it worth pointing out that the char, tyco, is a spotted skunk so his markings will be a lil bit different than a striped one, though still black and white I suppose.

My research found what you state there, that skunks, both striped and spotted, do have black bellies. I of course chose to do a white belly for the reasons you'd expect, that being to break up the large patch of black. I hope sometime in the future to figure out how to adapt the spotted skunk markings to an anthro bodyframe in such a way that a white belly is not necessary to keep from having a cavernous black expanse.
Smexy and very desirable. Great job shiuk.
Btw, don't be so hard on yourself. if even half the fandom is as untalented at making art as I am, we probably won't notice or don't care and think its great anyway. Those who do criticize beyond the scope of constructive criticism are probably furs who you wouldn't want around anyway, right?
