So 2018 has come to an end - as has has my funk. It’s hard to say how or why, but, I’ve been rather down lately. It feels like it’s been a slow drain for months, but it’s not until quite recently that I’ve noticed it. It’s quite frustrating, I thought it was an art block, but it feels worse than that.
Typically I don’t do New Years resolutions, they feel like a poor excuse to improve yourself without feeling too guilty. Like, you maybe had plans as far back as October to do something, but you decided “naw, it can wait until the next year.” Because nothing says “improving” yourself like waiting 3 months for an arbitrary “permission”. It reminds me of a Chinese proverb: The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.
But today, I think I’m going to bend that rule a little, if only because today is, after all, the 1st day of 2019.
Basically I’m going to focus less modeling, and more on drawings, including paper and pencil. I’ve been wanting to try to develop my drawing skills for a good while, mostly due to a principle that any artist should learn to use a pencil, regardless of other mediums. But I usually stall, procrastinate, and delay any actual attempts to improve my drawing skills, mostly because I tend to be divided over what I should be drawing (i.e. still life, basic shapes), vs want I want to draw (anthropomorphic characters). That is to say, drawing what I *should* be drawing is boring and unmotivating to me. Yet drawing what I *want* to draw is more my interest, but I rarely take the effort to improve my drawings, and they show.
So this year, I've made a choice between the two, and I’m going to try the “selfish” approach, and just draw what I want. It’s going to be a very bumpy and sloppy ride, but my give-a-damn has run out; I guess my low funk has become a blessing in disguise. To be sure, I won't completely skimp on the basics, but I'm putting more priority on just drawing what I want to draw.
So, on my strange journey to god-knows-where, I drew out Judy, in a very loose technique (we’ll call) for me. I had some images of Judy on Google Images to at least take note of key details, including her coloration, but other than that, I was on my own. Just my pencil, some sketch paper, and what little drawing experience I knew on the spot.
I penciled out 5 different poses of her, picked the one I like the most, took a pictures with my phone, and finished up digitally. I confess I cheated a little, though, by not only using the head from another pose, but I shrank the head as well, because I think it looks better.
Not the best effort, but I felt determined to do this in one day, inspired by two other art pieces I did (Though I didn’t rush myself as much with Judy as I did with Silver or Rita)
Incidentally, I put the other drawing-poses onto Deviant Art's Sta.sh.

...Oh, I also got a Twitter account recently. I'm still pondering why… 🤔
