Hey, now, Ed meant well, too. Honestly, his heart was more in the right place than Eddy's. Eddy was always doing it to fill their (or at least his) pockets to get jawbreakers. Ed was a kind boy, more often than not doing what he did for the sake of his friends, but not only was he none-too-bright, his mind was on another planet. Or several.
Of course, the movie wrapped up the series in a neat little bow and had Eddy (and possibly some of the other characters) grow as a character. : )
