The burning caterpillar might also represent a method of controlling infestations (it works great for Gypsy Moths) but you're probably right.
More seriously, the carving here is absolutely beautiful. The artwork has survived the 160+ years, and the lettering is a perfect example of 1850s-vintage lettering. Made by a master of his craft.
