The Elder Sire's Personal Guard
I felt I needed to make a ref for these two after some RP with
Nerull142000 and
ealadubh . Each of these guards are what are known as Fogbloods, or half breeds. Elgar is half Clydesdale, and Bastion is half Sluagh Mount.

Azura told me she gave me the unicorn experience in its 'purest' form, which I've taken to explain its 'Olde English' manner of speech. Do unicorns have a class system based on ethnic purity? I haven't had enough contact yet to notice but I hope not. Though I needed warriors or guardsmen I would prioritise the breeds with qualities most suited to the task.
Not in the way one would expect. There is a class system and heritage does have something to do with it, but purity isn't the only measuring stick. Pureblooded unicorns are typically at the top of the hierarchy because their instinctual "set of scales" are the most reputable for measuring the balance of a situation. Next are the Fogbloods, who come from only two distinct bloodlines, and are therefore represent balance just by existing. (Fogbloods can also be broken into sub-classes, but that gets pretty complicated.) Duskbloods are next, having four or six distinct bloodlines. They are largely considered "balanced" by unicorn society, but rumored to be indecisive or easily given over to suggestibility. Murkbloods are usually at the bottom of the totem pole, as they have an uneven number of bloodlines leading to their creation and, by unicorn tradition, are too "unbalanced" and unpredictable to be permitted too high of a station.
A Fogblood would still have the capabilities innate to Purebloods, but on a slightly lesser scale. Comparable magical stamina and strength would be a little diminished. Murkbloods, depending on what their heritage is, may be as capable as Fogbloods, slightly more magical than your average horse, or anywhere in between.
I wondered why Bastion had such an interesting coloring and horn configuration. Now it makes sense. I never knew that Unicorns actually mated outside their herds. Admittedly, I am also curious. Is it possible that some horses have been able to ascend to the form of Unicorn? And if so, I am curious as to how. Naturally, if that is deemed a secret or something I shouldn't know, I do not expect someone to explain it to me. All the same, I find you two quite fascinating.
Inter-herd breeding has become more common as time has gone on, but it is still regarded with a slight bit of stigma by parts of unicorn society. Just to clarify, when you say "ascend" do you mean they are born a horse and some means of magic or personal struggle has granted them a unicorn form?
Enedia: Is it yours too? *jokingly laughing* I'm sorry, I'm sorry. It would be nicer if you were still in your human form. I feel like I would get to know you better because of it, but since your other side is interfering, I don't think I could get a word in. We'll have to talk, human to human.
Human: Hey... are you there?
Unicorn: Naturally I be present. We be united within the same soul, where else dost thou expect to find me?
Human: I meant, 'do you feel like talking to me'. I need to run something by you, and I want your thoughts on the matter.
Unicorn: Surely thou knoweth my feelings already, since we be one?
Human: 'Feelings' maybe, but that doesn't mean we can't still surprise one another. You've mellowed a little since the spat over Moth.
Unicorn: Indeed, thine own reason and debating skiils with the Lady Acrathia and agreeable likeminded temperament towards Lord Auris left an impression upon me.
Human: Grudgingly.
Unicorn: ...
Human: Never mind. Since we're both here, let's talk face to face. We don't get to do this much without conflict outside of a lucid dream, and you tend to be most restless when I'm asleep.
Unicorn: It be so, since there is little to occupy oneself when the body doth not respond.
Human: Yeah, tell me about it. Feeding me the same dream over and over of Moth turning my human self into a donkey without you to protect me, had Azura not got to me first.
Unicorn: Doth it not proveth mine point as to not be taking mineself for granted?
Human: I'll give you that one.
Unicorn: Then what be it now, that concerneth thineself enough to pay due attention to me?
Human: Lady Acrathia, I think we should consult with her some more. Unseelie or not, we have less to two weeks to prepare ourselves and we're going to need all the help we can get. Would you be agreeable to that? I'd try not to hold you back this time.
Unicorn (after a thoughtful pause): Admittedly, thine words maketh a certain degree of sense, and for an Unseelie, the Queen of Witches doth expresses an aptitude to both listen and learn. If thou be able to persuade her more from a disastrous course, I wouldst not hold such a meeting against thyself.
Human: Yep. Some give-and-take. Then we're both on the same page. Can I go back to sleep now?
Unicorn: I shall send you back to slumber with pleasant apparitions. Rest well, o man, for we shall both need it ere the morning.

*Medoro, who has been sleeping outside the barn doors, peeks through the crack to see his charge in the middle of an apparently very involved dream. He watches with concern for a couple of moments until Eala stills, and then he lays his head back down on his paws.*
*nudges Medoro awake the next morning...*
Hey. What are you doing sleeping outside there? You know you can come in if you have nowhere else to sleep? I'm glad you're there actually, we've been spending less and less formal time together. Does the Blue Lady have you restrained on official business?

Medoro: *slowly opens one eye and stretches before shaking himself to full wakefulness and adjusting his bow tie* Good morning, Master Eala. This arrangement was merely temporary. I was charged with guarding your door while Sir Cathal was called away on a separate patrol. My mistress has been... how to put it... anxious, of late. I had a few things to attend to in her place. However, now her concern seems to revolve around you. *he raises an eyebrow* She is under the impression that you require more robust supervision.
Medoro: Yes. I believe her exact words were, "Watch him like a hawk, and if he leaves his mound at all, summon me." Your last interaction with the Traitor set her on edge. *his ears fall back and he tries to soften his next words with an apologetic tone* The fact that you came into her presence in any capacity has rendered you untrustworthy in my mistress' estimation.
Well let's see if I can't 'earn' some of that trust back. I have an honest report to make to her that she will really want to hear, and so will you. Can you grant me an official audience with her this morning? I'll need you present as well. If you can, I'll wait here till you get back.
Medoro: *he leads the way out of the doors and down the path* She does, yes, but she prefers more quaint quarters when she is working on personal business. *The path leads past several mounds of varying sizes and styles, until one particularly ornate one with a door adorned with gold and turquoise accents comes into view. Medoro smiles at the irony* Quaint being a relative term, of course.
Medoro: *bowing his head as a gesture for you to enter* My mistress rarely stands on such ceremony outside of the Council. Please, make yourself comfortable.
*The interior of the mound is spacious and elegantly decorated with gold and turquoise. There are cushions available for those of equine stature to make themselves comfortable. Azura sits at a chair with a book propped open on her lap.*

Yes. Information. With all due respect My Lady, I am a unicorn and my chief concern is with the balance as the Rules dictate. To achieve that balance, one must have knowledge of both sides of it. And I got far more out of her than she did of me; she did try to ensnare my curiosity, but as you can see I'm still here. I did turn the tables though, and followed her tendrils back to their source, weaving a ward around the bell that would take her some time to disentangle, so nobody will have any trouble from her for a while. If I have overstepped my boundaries then I humbly apologise. But it was my decision as the human; the unicorn mentality has given me a hard time over it already.
However my other responsibility and motivation is the wellbeing of the lad Candle, whom I have also taken charge of. I've been able to uncover a great deal about the nature of his 'curse', which with her guard down the Traitor let slip. The spells upon Candle from two different sources have made him a unique case study of 'balance' in his right, and though I wish not to proportion any 'blame' for it - you couldn't have known what would happen, at the time - both yourself and the Traitor are responsible for his current condition. I understand it is your wish to return him to humanity and I will offer all the support and effort that I can in that endeavour, but I regret that there is no way it can be done by normal means without dooming him forever.

Azura: *icily* We do not need information, we need her in shackles! *she stands abruptly, causing the book on her lap to go flying* You tipped my hand by revealing your condition to her, and now the entirety of the Verdant Hills may be in danger!
*a slow cold breeze begins to whirl through the room, picking up in speed as her temper flares* Why, when you originally came to me for knowledge and study, have you avoided me at every turn? There is so much more I could have told you about the magicks affecting Candle, who, by the way, you have no right to assume charge of. He has been my responsibility since the beginning of his curse. I know the other magic involved because I was there to help bind it. You would know that, if you simply talked to me! *the wind now begins to howl as her frustration reaches a feverish pitch*
Medoro: *raising his voice above the wind* Mistress, if you would hear what the young master has to say-
Azura: *the wind dies suddenly and the book puts itself tidily on a shelf, but the tension does not lessen* It had better be remarkable after the destruction he has caused.

If I may respond...
Point one: I haven't been 'avoiding' you, I just haven't had much to report before. These affairs take a long time, and I had to be ready. If it would help repair some trust between us, have Medoro accompany me more often as a go-between. He's a very useful tutor and consultant, and I'm a little surprised he's been absent lately. Plus you have been so preoccupied with so many distractions, you didn't need another one.
Point two: I had to be sure I was correct so that you can fully appreciate what Candle has actually become now. Two hundred years in that shape has moulded and bonded his spirit to it, and the memories and thought you warded to safety all that time ago are the only humanity he has left. And as long as I have an ounce of humanity left in myself, my own nature is to look at every alternative to solve a problem. That is key to my own destiny in this form. The direct fae approach, to isolate the main symptom of a problem and tackle it head-on, would have been a distaster for Candle; one mistake in tinkering with the delicate magics placed on him and the safeties would collapse, leaving him as a beast in every respect with everything he ever was lost forever. For my own peace of mind and his, I could not let that risk be taken with him.
Point three: Moth was already well aware of my condition long beforehand. A new unicorn pops up out of nowhere after decades of absence, of course word is going to get around, especially in a world resistant to change that's used to centuries of status quo. She would have kept trying, becoming more and more desperate in her methods. Which brings me to point four.
*projects an image of Lord Auris onto the floor*
First contact has now been made. Like the Traitor, they sensed my presence and reached out to me. This is what I wanted to report.

Azura: *she does not bother looking at the projection* I know full well what you have been up to. That was your bargaining chip after all of the extra work you have made for me? Are you proud that you have gone behind my back and with no thought to what this could have meant?
Medoro: *cannot keep his tail from wagging excitedly despite his otherwise entirely calm demeanor* Mistress, surely-
Azura: *holds up a hand to silence him* No. I will be heard, because I have not been given a voice in any of these reckless decisions! So, here are some points for you, Eala. Counterpoint one: You have been avoiding me because you know of my condition and you worry that I am incompetent compared to you. I'm not an invalid or a fool! I welcomed you into the sidhe so you may learn, not so you could create more problems for me to fix. Medoro has been nothing but an enabler of your antics, so you will no longer be in contact. I will be your direct mentor instead.
Medoro: *cannot silence a whimper*
Azura: Counterpoint two: You don't even have an inkling of the nature of the magic upon Candlewick. He is not in any danger of losing his humanity. There are magicks at play that you are unprepared to understand. If any risk has been taken, it has been by the Traitor. You will have no involvement with him either, because you have proven to be the greatest risk to him of all! Really, bandying about as if you are a scholar in the ancient magicks.
Counterpoint three: You walked straight into her hands without an escort or giving me the courtesy of a warning.
And my final point: Because of your absolute disregard for the safety of everyone involved in these matters and your completely untrustworthy behavior you will live here under house arrest and under my watch for the next two weeks. Medoro, you are dismissed.

*sighs* As you command, My Lady, but that will entail me missing my scheduled meeting with the unicorn Regency. Regency decorum also demands an outsider to the court be present with an oathgiver, and they had agreed that as a close advisor to you, Medoro could have acted as such.
In my defence, I do not claim to be a learned scholar of magic. The mentality of the unicorn possesses the aptitude; my own talents as a human are a lateral and logical train of thought that enables me to take the principles of magic and apply them in a less orthadox fashion. If I am to remain here for the next two weeks, then if it pleases My Lady, perhaps I can assist you in that fashion with your researches.

Medoro: *gives you an apologetic look and slinks out with his tail between his legs*
Azura: I know better than to snub the Elder Sire of the Verdant Hills. *she produces a folded piece of parchment and holds it out. It appears to be tied with golden horse hair* This was delivered to the High Court this morning, addressed to you. Medoro will be your oath-giver as planned, but the two of you will not have contact until then. Lord Auris has made it clear that I am not welcome in his realm. That is why I must ensure that you are prepared for the Council.
Your help with my research would certainly be appreciated. It does concern you, after all. Proper unicorn etiquette is murky to us at best without Titania's guidance.

*struggling to contain inner feelings of confusion, having taken the blow somewhat hard and now not knowing quite what to think...*
...Should I... read this aloud?
*thinks* I don't know if I understand her anymore, or myself. I really thought I was on the verge of a diplomatic breakthrough... Is she mad at me or not, or just desperate to keep everything under control? Or the sickness making her lash out? I've never taken her to be incompetent, I'm more concerned of the exact opposite. But I've overextended myself for sure... somebody's played me for a fool, and here I thought my other half was the arrogant one.
*mentally takes and unrolls the parchment, thinking further...* Don't tell me this is what finally got me in hot water... the Regency must have the sense to know Azura would have intercepted it. I have a sinking feeling I'm about to find out who is the more capable politician.

Azura: *quietly reads your face for a few moments and then sits back down to rub her temples* I used to be so good at speaking to mortals, and here I am, injuring the one I saw... still see promise in. *she rubs her mouth, contemplating what to say* My temper is short in this stage of my life and fear makes me... abrasive at best. I will be honest, Eala, you scared the hell out of me. Not just for myself or the sidhe, but for you. You stepped directly in the line of fire twice. You, my one hope and last desperate measure, walked straight into the fray and I allowed it to happen. Have I fallen so far? Am I so out of touch that I forgot what it means to mentor someone?
*she dashes the welling tears away hurriedly and stands* I do not retract what I said about you being reckless, but I must put the blame for that upon my own shoulders. I should have been more directly involved with your lessons.

*softened...* Well... let's salvage what we can from this particular lesson, eh? Are we not both curious to know what this says?
*thinks...* Ye gods, I'm beginning to see what drives these lands towards a need for absolute unchanging stability. Even at the best of times, every single one of these people would be emotionally fickle and fragile and terrible at handling upsets. Wise old Acrathia has the sense to know it. I thought I had it bad, but they don't need a unicorn for a saviour, they need a psychologist.

*The same silvery script now covers the page with what appears to be the names, rank, and heritage of the entire Unicorn Council. There are eleven names but Auris' is not on the list. At the bottom of the page there is a message that reads, "Do not let this piece of parchment out of your sight. -Auris"
Azura: *Leads the way down a short but wide corridor and turns the doorknob of one of the chambers. She then quickly turns it in the opposite direction and back the same way once more. It opens to reveal a pocket dimension tailor-made to mimic the comforts of your previous faerie mound* This is where you will be staying. Peaseblossom will still attend to you. She has grown rather fond of you.
Well, if you have a library or bookshelf I can peruse, and see what catches my interest.
Do you also have some parchment handy? A few sheets for scribing some notes on. I should draft a reply to the Regency, let them know everything's fine and I'll be there at the appointed time with my oathgiver.

Azura: *she opens the door opposite to your quarters* This is my personal library. Peruse to your heart's content. *she flicks her wrist and a generous roll of parchment as well as a quill and inkwell appear neatly on a low table in your quarters* I have some Court matters to tend to, so I will be occupied in the study. Feel free to seek me out if you need anything further or have any questions. I do wish to make amends for neglecting my duties since your arrival.
Perfect. I have plenty to occupy myself now.
*thinks* Don't let the scroll out of my sight, eh? I think I can do a bit better than that.
*taking the scroll with me, I spend time in the library acquainting myself with the relevant book sections, keeping my senses open to detect anyone magically observing me, until I am sure I am not being spied upon.

The library is modest compared to Lord Umund's collection, but several tomes of spells and Seelie histories fill the shelves. There are some smaller works of fae prose, songs, and poetry, and two obviously human publications. One is the original compilation of the Pinocchio serial, and the other is a collection of Shakespeare's works.

*Thinks... She's clean. And sensitive to such things it appears. Probably why Azura hasn't tinkered, it's impossible to be discrete. Still, better give her a distraction for a while.
No no, it's fine. I was just... testing somethIng. Didn't mean to startle you. Listen, could you do something for me? I'm not able to talk to Medoro and he left rather upset. Go find him and cheer him up a bit - give him word that everything's alright, and that he will have his chance to accompany me to the unicorn Regency as my oathgiver. But he must stay calm and not get overexcited and spook anyone. That's all, and bring me back his answer, thanks.
*thinks... Azura's bound to find out, but it's the breathing space I need and it sounds innocent enough.

Right, now to take care of this little business.
*Tearing off piece of the parchment, Eala magically shapes and colours it to resemble the original document, then using the quill and ink, transcribes the message, including the magically encrypted portion, giving it the same enchantment and magical signiature to make it as indisguishable from the original scroll as possible; the only difference being that the names of the regency council are intentionally mispelled and mixed up, so that the names themselves wouldn't possess any power were the duplicate scroll to fall into the wrong hands. Finally, the duplicate is rolled up, tied with Auris' hair strand, and put away in a 'safe' place so that it at least appears that the effort is being made to hide it.
*This done, Eala wraps the original scroll around his horn and ties it with a strand of his own hair, and places a couple of small wards on the scroll to turn it invisible and give it a protective shield; the power of his own horn should be more than sufficient to swamp that being radiated by the scroll itself.
And that, I believe, is as safe as it'll ever possibly be.

*wakes the next morning to discover the invitation left by Acrathia...
Somebody else reads my dreams. I wonder what she uses for carrier pigeons.
*mindspeaks* If you can hear me from in here, I'm coming soon. The invitation says 'walk in any direction', but where exactly is your chateau located? Or is it a Baba Yaga house that goes where it pleases?

Acrathia: *Mindspeak* My home is a demiplane in the sidhe created by my own will. This way I can only be found by those I wish to meet. Expect far nicer accommodations than what Baba Yaga would offer you. I swear, we may be unseelie of similar mindsets, but I will never understand her distaste for aesthetics.
*mindspeaks* Find some other way to get hold of me, this mental link would be a major risk if I'm stuck this close to her for the next fortnight. *sighs* And I wanted to pass on my concerns about Enedia as well, she's not in a good frame of mind. Maybe you should give her some attention instead for a while.
