His kind was though to be extinct by most, yet they remained in a kind of exile from the events and politics of the recent stages of interstellar history.
Unlike many of the space-faring species, they welcomed and embraced the emerging and slowly spreading ascended biology, the great step of evolution allowing the usage of now abundantly available advanced materials and technologies, within -and expanding the- framework of the highly adaptive system of biology.
They still use external armor as an additional option for combat preparation, although creatures of ascended biology are naturally very durable, along with redundancies and regenerative capabilities.
Thier internal organs include power generating ones for their flight-assisting gravitational distorters (visible in their wing limbs) and also to allow them to recharge their weapons and other devices with energy from their own bodies, although this comes at the cost of seemingly supernatural hunger.
Their return was seen as a kind of miracle in the harsh-fated, oppression- and poverty-ridden outer colonies of a long collapsed galaxy-spanning civilization.

The creature's kind I linked were born into a long line for ancestry of ascended biological beings.
We talked a bit about this subject under that picture, and I definitely intend to expand the lore in drawn or written form more in the future.
But to summarize, the way their bodies work is based on biology, not mechanics, but this biology utilizes a high ratio of metals, polymers and plastics that are naturally produced in their own metabolism and built into their bodies by procedures that are biological, but enhanced with new efficiencies and possibilities carefully developed to be included in their DNA.
Their evolution carries on adapting and improving these artificially enhanced processes to deal with the environments and struggles of the interstellar era and beyond.
The most obvious characteristic of them is their extraordinary resilience and resistance, with many redundancies that let them survive even seemingly grievous wounds, and regenerate flesh and even lost limbs slowly over time.

Generally familiar situation. For example all intelligent life (excluding the very first) and at least half of the unintelligent lifeforms in the universe Mavir was created by artificial means, including using very sophisticated technological and sometimes magical solutions.
So the creation of metal alloys and polymers by means of biology does not seem to be something impossible. Or a fusion reactor. :)

Yep, the first generations were created artificially, then multiple species of them continued developing on their own, often in hazardous conditions when the main project was abandoned but the events couldn't be reverted anymore.
The technology to modify normal living creatures with this technology still exists, not widespread though in my setting.
In your example, It would be interesting to see in the case of all current intelligent life having been created artificially, if the creators were also made this way, and their creators, etc, until we find the true ancient ones :)
And yes, the possibilities are expanded a lot when biological systems have the potential to integrate and adapt such features of technology.
