September 27, 2006;
I had seen the history books, read some of the stories, and studied some pictures, but none could prepare me for what I saw...
I thought, some sixty years later, that there only would be Memories left... I somewhat comprehend and understand Death, and have glimpsed at Infinity, but I guess some things are as resiliant as Memories.
In the back reaches of the camp, there stood the re-constructed Crematoria; ashes and bone remained in the furnaces. In the "storeroom" a large coffin, somewhere to the tune of 2x2x1.5 meters in size, a sign saying that it was filled with the bones of victims of the furnaces.
And just outside, there is a monument; a "hubcap" on top of a great basin, like a UFO landing on the crater of a building. And inside, I saw another incarnation of death.
Human ashes.
A giant mound. Something like 50 feet across, the pile itself must have been at least 20, maybe even 25 feet tall. You could see bone. You could even see bits of even wire, and creamic peices. But the main thing was this massive pile of human ashes bearing witness to time, and beign witnessed by all who dared to look.
Look. Learn the lesson their suffering teaches.

Yeah, ya can't really "get it" untill you see something first hand.
For example, the current "war" in Iraq. Whenever you, for example, hear about 20 dead, 200 injured in a suicide bombing, what are they to you? Do you see each individual face, or do you just hear the words from a news anchor, or just see ink on your newspaper?

ha! Ashes are ashes, I have seen all that needs to be seen of a person and mourning over the fallen will do nothing but bring you quicker to their fate. Bury or spread the ashes and go on. I feel better knowing they died for a reason that has touched the Eartrh, I feel worse for those who die every day from car crashes and drugs etc. they die for nothing, and they will simply be forgotten. Those who died there will be remembered. To be remembered is the closest thing to immortality, those ashes have more power then you or me. Feel worse for your current nothingness then for their demise, or become forgotten!
