Story
The sun was shining, the sky was clear, and a wind was blowing just enough that it was not too hot of a summer day. This was a perfect day for sunbathing beside the pool. Or at least that was what Sharon thought when she had arrived at her local pool.
Although Sharon enjoyed getting a nice summer tan to flaunt, she nevertheless was self-conscious about skin damage and what it could do to her appearance down the road. In fact, she was so concerned that she ordered off the internet an off-brand sunscreen, whose creators claimed that shark oils incorporated into the product would help prevent skin damage. Unfortunately, it never crossed Sharon’s mind that such a promise could be too good to be true, nor to do any research about whether sharks truly cannot get cancer.
After Sharon had found the perfect spot beside the pool, she draped her beach towel over the reclining poolside chair. Before she lounged on it, she first made sure to lather on her sunscreen. The lotion created a cool sensation on Sharon’ skin as it made contact with it. Since the sun was beaming that day, the chilling sensation felt refreshing in the heat. What really surprised Sharon was that she could not smell any fishy aroma from the sunscreen. She assumed that it would have at least a hint of fish because of the shark oil used in it, but she was definitely not complaining that it.
Now that Sharon was protected from the sun’s harmful rays, she lay down on her reclining chair and began soaking in the vitamin D. She even started to doze off as she relaxed. However, her peaceful relaxation was interrupted when she heard whispers coming from the other pool-goers. When the chatter become too distracting for even Sharon, she finally peered around to see what all the commotion was about. She soon realized that it was centered around her.
When Sharon looked behind herself, she was shocked to see that a large, shark tail had sprouted out from approximately where her tailbone was located. Composed almost entirely of cartilage, her newly formed shark tail flailed in the air, like a fish out of water. But this was not the only change that had happened to her. Three slits flanking the sides of her rib cage indicated that she now had gills in additional to her lungs for breathing. Furthermore, a dorsal fin had also appeared right on the center of her spine.
Her hands and feet were also not spared. The nails on both her fingers and toes had grown pointers, more like a claw of an animal than the well-permed nails of a human. Although the webbing between her digits were not as obvious as one would expect from an aquatic hybrid. However, the largest change that had happened to Sharon was on her face. Her mouth had elongated into a snout, similar to a shark’s, along with serrated teeth that lined her jaw.
After Sharon had been bewildered by these changes to her body, she finally started trying to figure out what might have caused the transformation. She first made a mental check of all the meals and food she had consumed that day, but nothing came to mind. She then turned to people she met and things she had used, but she was still drawing a blank, or at least she was until she glanced down at the tube of sunscreen she had used. The manufacturer had advertised that the product used shark oils in order to help protect the user’s skin. It did not seem like too much of a coincidence that she had been turned into a human-shark hybrid after using sunscreen made from sharks.
“Giving my money back would not be enough to compensate me for this fiasco,” Sharon muttered to herself before tossing the tube of sunscreen into her bag. Since Sharon could not do anything about her condition, she returned to basking in the sun. This was a problem for future Sharon to deal with. At the moment, all she wanted to do was soak up the rays of the sun and maybe even test out her new gills in the pool.
