No makin’ calamari out of this squid - it’s Claw Jaw! (or Scuba, for all you Beast Wars II fans).
I've always had a soft spot for this particular guy. While I did my darndest to stay faithful to the toy designs on Spittor and Injector, I did take one liberty with CJ's design here - he only comes with a single "claw" weapon that attaches to either arm...er...tentacle...which form the robot arms...even though they're tenta- POINT IS, he only has one of those claw thingies, but I decided to give him two. I pictured in my mind them sorta becoming hands/fingers for his robot mode's upper appendages.
There was a really neat effect the highlighting was having on the maroon, and I constantly toiled with whether or not I should put gleam strokes on those areas. Of course, giving the effect that he’s wet/shiny (transforming into a squid and all) would make sense, so that’s what I ended up going with.
I dunno if I ever mentioned it, but I’ve figured out how I can make brushes with and for GIMP, and I ended up using one (which I've had for a while) to make the purple spots on his arms and legs. I also used the same brush for the backdrop, using both the paintbrush and eraser tools to make a bit of a water ripple effect.
