I used to work with prototype mechanical equipment involving motors and winches that hauled equipment around in a big room. We rigged up multiple emergency-stop buttons, each on the end of a long cable, that would cut all power to the motors. In the early stages, we gave each observer stationed around the room a button, with instructions to press it if they saw anything the least bit wrong. Sometimes those buttons got pushed, when the thing started to oscillate, before we had all the constants in the control system dialed in.

I can't imagine what that process would be like if all those motors/actuators were strapped to your personal and valuable self.
