The theory I had behind this was that ditto is able to change the structure of their cells to assume any form according to Pokédex entries, so perhaps ditto is changing into something fattening or simply something/someone with a lot of mass.
At the end of the day it could be whatever you want it to be, including magic or just remaining a mystery.
